    Harmonic Balancer Pulley Removal

    Good evening folks

I have an issue with my harmonic pulley and just wanted to know if anyone has any drawings on how to remove this pulley.
I haven’t had a look myself yet to see what is required but I have had one of the parts suppliers advise me that I require a special tool to remove this pulley.
    I have a D3 with the 4ltr V6 petrol.

As always any information would be greatly appreciated.

Unless there is something specifically different (I doubt it) with the V6 petrol, a standard Harmonic Balancer Puller (eg. TTI 46pc Harmonic Balancer Set TTIAUTOT017 | Total Tools) will do the job.

Someone will come in and correct me if there is something different. A good tool to have in stock if you work on your own vehicles often. The one I've linked is pretty good and I have had great luck over the years buying from Total Tools. There are heaps of examples out there, though I would suggest the $20 ones on eBay could turn scary... That's a lot of tension...

    Good luck.

If you want to know all there is to know and videos, just Google "2004 ford explorer 4.0 crankshaft pulley removal".

I doubt very much that there is any difference

I have a D3 with the 4.0l v6. I recently encountered the problem described in https://www.fixmyoldride.com/Ford-crankshaft-pulley.html .I had to replace belt+tensioner+idler, together with the balancer, which was the original source of the problem.

Reading the workshop manual, I saw that I needed special tools to remove the fan clutch, a special tool to hold the balancer while loosening the retaining bolt, a puller to remove the balancer, and a seal remover to remove and replace the crankshaft oilseal. the manual notes that the balancer retaining bolt is tight, use once only, and must be replaced. replacement of the oilseal is only commonsense.

People do manage to make do without special tools. In this case I decided the risk of my making a mess of it was too high and so took the job to my local garage. They billed me 1.5 hours for the job. Money well spent, I think.
