Oil Leak from rear engine sump

As you purchased interstate was it delivered to Adelaide by road transport car carrier.
I have known of a similar problem where vehicle was loaded with nose in the air and all the engine oil had run to the rear and leaked out of rear main seal. Would pay to fully clean leaked oil and further check.
    Cheers

I would doubt a rear main would leak at only 30,000km. Front seals we have read about and also cam covers, but not rear mains. Inclined transport also unlikely as then all cars would be leaking if you note how they transport them.

I agree that it would appear that the valley at the oil filter has had oil sitting in it and inclined transport would have caused it to run out down the back.

Most likely due to rushed servicing at the stealer when they connect the suction hose to the port and undo the filter housing at the same time, the oil hasnt all drained back and when you take the filter off, it fills the valley.

Worth a quick check as suggested.

Thanks for the suggestion but the top of the motor/valley area is as clean as a whistle as is the rear of the engine. I wish it was coming from that area because the fix is simple. Cheers

Cheap bore scope from eBay. I bought one with a super long cable on it. Excellent for that. Was sub 100 bucks

So, here's another idea. The vehicle is at 30,000km approx, 3 and a bit years old, potentially less than a year out of warranty, has a LR dealer service history and now has an oil leak that should have been found at the last service.
    Am I basically on track?
If yes, then go to Solitaire service centre in Adelaide armed with all the facts and ask them to fix it as a warranty claim. At the very least they should start a conversation with LRA, they may come back with some form of goodwill offer, which might help but that you are also with your rights to politely decline and keep asking for it to be fixed at no cost. At the same time start a conversation with consumer law, there is a thread in this forum on the topic of I remember correctly. Fundamentally, Aust consumer law said that irrespective of any manufacturer's warranty they have an overriding responsibility for the goods sold to be fit for purpose, within what is considered to be reasonable use, your situation, that your vehicle has developed this oil leak, not reasonable at 30,000km.
Get hold of all the information you can, go and put your case, there is lots of information out there.
    Good luck
    Peter

Yes Peter you are right on track. And I have in part commenced that process, I will also have a discussion with Consumer & Business Services this week. The most disappointing part is it not being reported as an outstanding alert at the most recent 48 month service because the original owner was probably in a better position to succeed in getting it fixed under warranty from the dealer that had serviced the vehicle from day 1. Thank you for your response.

Well, have just recently purchased the above vehicle only to find on arrival from interstate there is a leak at the rear of the engine. LR stealer in Adelaide diagnosed it as a rear sump leak and I am awaiting a quote but the estimate for repairs is $2-2.5k!

What makes this even more disappointing is the interstate stealer did the 48mth service at 29,400km (now 29536kms) and the oil leak was not reported on. I paid half the service cost as part of the 'subject to sale' under the belief that any significant problems would be raised as an outstanding Alert as part of the service......how wrong I was! The previous owner had the vehicle serviced by LR as required at the 12 monthly intervals.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is it a common problem? If so would you pm me with the cost to repair the leak; Or if someone has undertaken the repair themselves also pm me please (I am a retired mechanic but aren't getting excited about taking this on).

    Thanks.

Ps. Further an Indy has also diagnosed it as a engine sump leak at rear. Top of engine is clear of oil. I will check rear of engine higher up soon with an endoscope & report back.
    Final update:
Engine sump removed and oil pan gasket replaced. Leak fixed. Thanks to all who provided advice and ideas.

Did the Adelaide dealer explain how the leak was missed at the last service? Have they contributed towards the repair (presumably by an Indie)?
