What size /weight van or trailer with 2.7 do you tow

    Gday everyone,

Just curious as to what size / weight van or trailer people tow with the 2.7 engine. I have the D3 but I assume the D4 would be similar.

Looking like the next several years will be holiday's within Aus , so the boss thinks a van instead of getting another camper trailer.
I have a ex-army haulmark trailer if we want to do any serious stuff .

I like the look/size of an 18ft trakmaster Nullabour i looked at a year or so ago but havent even begun to get serious. My D3 is stock , no ecu power upgrades so really looking at something that the car will be able to cope with, dont need a block of flats as there is just the 2 of us.

Just trying to get a handle on size/weight real world capabilities of the 2.7 engine.

G’day Bulletman, we had a stock standard D3, 2.7, and a Nullabor, and went like a dream ,Bloomfield Track , etc . etc., all up weight 5800kg.

did that for for several years , now own a D4 3.0 and yes easier, but you will not find a better tow vehicle , either one

    Hi Mate
I’m currently on a big lap with my 2011 2.7L. engine is completely stock, no upgrades.

Our caravan is a full size 22.68ft semi off-road caravan, weighed a few weeks ago and is 3.38tons.
The car is weighing 2.920 fully loaded with our gear.

    gross combined is 6.250

from memory the 2.7l has 440nm torque. My car sits really well up to 100km/ hr but feels like it’s trying a bit hard if I want to do 110km/hr if there is any wind around, though I don’t like this set up at that speed, gets a bit light on the road.

I cant compare how it pulls vs a 600/700nm Torque newer discovery 4/5 but subject to the speeds above I’ve had no complaints.

keep in mind I’ve had a new gearbox put in on this trip, but so has my mates BT50 with half the amount of km’s and five years newer.

happy to answer any other questions you have

Love the tow capability of my first D3. Fuel consumption with a 3 tonne plus boat was hardly more than with out it on. Ditto for my heavy steel camper trailer. I expect wind would impact on a high van and economy. Doubt you will find a grumble from many of us with towing. Chat about 4WDing and the tow hitch is a whole new topic No plow on my last or current D3. (That is a non issue for flat roads.)

Pull a 3.5T quite high block of flats, but do have a mild remap set up for towing ie from 134KW @ 3222rpm and 430 Nm @ 2806 rpm up to 164KW @ 3556 rpm and 507 Nm @ 2556 rpm thanks to DazzaTD5. I can keep up, but like to travel 85-90 (being mindful of and helping those wanting to pass) and generally get between 16-20L/100 km depending on the usual factors.

Thanks for the reply , i have a mitch hitch , and towed a camper trailer most of the way around Australia , but , it weighed in at maybe 1.2t max more like 1000kg , and was low so the car hardly knew it was there. I was just trying to get an idea on what sort of weight was a good fit as when the time comes for us to start shopping , its most likely going to be online and interstate as the options up here are very limited , so would be good to have a rough idea on what suits us and the tow tug as i have no plans on getting rid of the D3 anytime soon.

Thanks for the info , 85-90 suits me fine , 1 company i drive road trains for has speed limited to 90 and thats ok with me , if im in that much of a hurry i should have gone by plane.

I'll say something different and recommend you adopt a 'lighter is better' approach.
What you can tow and what you should tow may not be the same thing.
Lotta very large caravans heading north at the moment and I reckon many of them would benefit from going on a diet.

I concur. The bride had her heart set on the one we now have (front opening veranda), but given the choice I would have gone as light as possible. Used to manage perfectly well 40 plus years ago in single axle Barravans out on mineral exploration work. Admittedly no wc or shower included.
