    D3 rear propshaft problem

    hi guys
during washing car after 4wd drive I have found that rear propshaft (cvt ?) joint is leaking and throwing grease all around.
Has anyone experience of this problem, can it be fixed somehow?
Also it is quite wobbly. I can push it back and forth a bit. Don't know if it is ok or not.
What do you think? New propshaft?

I had / have the same issue , been over 12 months maybe longer ,never got worse, not play, so i just been keeping an eye on it. I checked the centre bearing or support bearing or whatever its called and that seems ok .

prolly havent helped much ,but i got no replies when i posted about it so gathered i was the lucky one.

I would tend to it. Once the grease is gone. The joint won't last much longer. I know where there is a cheap one from a D4, pm me if you want

It's a pretty easy replacement job. But you do need the correct torx sockets and the new bolts aren't cheap IIRC.

I looked at just replacing the center bearing but it made sense to replace it all in my assessment.

My understanding is that's not the centre bearing , you are talking about the 1 that supports the tail shaft , that pic is where the tail shaft joins the back of the transfer case.

I would just re use the old bolts. To make the job easy. You can get torx spanners. Easier on the ground then on a hoist. On the hoist you have to stop the shaft to tighten the bolts

Thanks guys. I think I'll go with new rear propshaft and old bolts. Looks like it last about 200-250k and mine is 199
Have found this video How to Replace the Rear Propshaft on Discovery 3/4 - YouTube
So it is quite easy to replace on the ground

A word of warning. He says you can use a standard socket. That wasn't my experience. Trying to to get the required torque on the rears the standard socket just rounded the heads. I had to get the Torx socket (thought as Josh says you could use Torx spanners but the rears need a fair lever to get the right torque IIRC) to get the correct torque onto it.
