Back to the dealer you bought it off asap...presuming you bought it recently it has to have a warranty of sorts written or implied.

Took a look today and found:

    - no oil on the garage floor.
    - no signs of any oil leak under the car
    - did find what appears to be a small leak from this gizmo ( battery on left, engine on right of photo) - it doesn’t look like a major leak but a few drops onto the exhaust will make a bit of smoke. I assume it’s s some sort of filling point?

That’s the AC high and low pressure filling points. It is really unlikely to be leaking from there.

Directly below the ac fill points on the battery side you'll find the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) - valve, part of the emissions control, for the lh bank of cylinders. These can fail where the tube that goes to the inlet manifold connects to the valve. Then you have strong smell of diesel exhaust as well. If its just grey smoke, id be checking if any wiring loom is in contact or near the turbo and exhaust on that side.
