Looks like a good buy as most things have been done. Cranks worry me too..so we bought petrol..but there's many thoussnds of diesel D3 and D4s running around quite happily.
E locker is a big plus too.
Hi guy
Looking at buying a D4 around the 2010 - 2013
Currently looking at
2011 Land Rover Discovery 4 SDV6 SE Auto 4x4 MY12
207000 kms
Listed with the following items
-full Landrover service history with dealer with receipts
-factory electronic rear diff and privacy glass
-new front control arm bushes
-new electronic oil sensor
-updated air suspension compressor replaced under warranty
-secondary turbo and oil return replaced and upgraded
-timing belts replaced
The price is low, almost to good to be true.
I believe it to be an honest sale as the owner also just informed me yesterday LD identified a rocker cover is weeping and needs replacing.
Would being serviced by LD with their extended intervals leave this one at a higher risk of crankshaft failure?
Also do the 2013 onwards not suffer from the crankshaft failures
Leaving me with do I look at spending more and going with 2013 with lower kms servicing at 13k? assuming the 2013 don’t suffer from crankshaft failure that is
I have been really keen on a D4 for awhile now but now reading about the crankshaft has me nervous..
Thanks guys

The weeping rocker cover could well be a cracked inlet manifold leading to Restricted Performance problems. If that is the case it is not cheap to fix. Get it properly looked at by an experienced LR mechanic who knows about these issues before buying. The plastic inlet manifold is the rocker cover.

All 3.0ltr V6 Diesel engines fitted to the RRS/D4 have the potential to suffer a crackshaft failure, even the 2.7Ltr has been known to do it. You are not the only nervous person out there.
I service every 26,000Km, plus I do an engine oil and filter change in between at 13,000Km.
I would be looking MY13 ones, as they will have the 8-speed transmission (Rotary dial to select gears and steering wheel gear change paddles).

Haven't heard of 3.0 Jaguar engines doing crankshafts.
I expect they do.
Just thinking about this, the 800cc (or was it 840? can't remember.) 1953/4 Morris Minor Series 2 was well known for breaking crankshafts which was fixed when they designed the 1000cc Minor 1000.
We haven't progressed very far, have we!!![]()

I'll put a different spin to my reply because I think your dilemma is more about money than the car.
If you have the spare cash to repair/fit a new engine then no worries.....buy the car and enjoy it.
BUT......
If the cost of repairs/replacement engine is going to be an issue then perhaps save your self some grief and buy something else.
Good luck.

I would look for a good D4 2.7L, less problematic than a 3,0L.
But a good one may be hard to find.
In fact I was speaking to Rick at Ricks repairs(well known LR Indie),Nerang, and he said exactly that to me today.
Oh,and if the deal is to good to be true, more than likely it is.
