    Restricted performance 2011 3 liter D4 235,000 kls

    Hi there
    There may be a place to reveal the info I need but I can't find it.
    My D4 randomly drops into restricted performance, only when towing a trailer either loaded or not. I don't recall it doing so without a trailer. As an aside the trailer is not recognized by the car as it (trailer) is all LED lights.
    My local L/R mechanic has put his computer on it and it comes up with a turbo related problem. I have had the oil line mod done a few years ago.
    I do give it a bit of a flogging with 150/160 kph on our back roads so I don't think its a DPF problem. Sometimes I think it's running rough before it does the restricted performance bit but it's generally on the same piece of **** Qld highway (south of Gympie) which is notorious for vibes. Having said that it did the same thing on the way to Coffs Harbour with a trailer load of wood.
    Each time it happens I pull over, turn off and wait the required 3/4 minutes and normally the problem has gone and off we go.
    Last week I towed a horse float, empty, and the problem popped up. Stopped and did the wait bit, continued and picked up the mare, no small horse. Drove home at 90/100 kph because of the horse and no problems at all!
    Since then I have put the boot in a lot with full throttle to 140ish time and time again. Still goes like **** off a shovel and no lights!!
    Question is :
    What should I look at before the turbo!! Lots of money to remove/replace.

    Tks

    Could be many things I guess, you don't quote an error code. Nonetheless since you says it occurs only while towing check over your vacuum system thoroughly before deciding it really is a turbo problem.

    Pretty sure you don't have a dpf and I would think you really need some live data, someone in the copilot seat with a diagnostic tool.

    Being a 3.0 D4 you have two turboes....
    Check vac lines and yes, DTCs would be great.
    Intermittent faults like this are likely to be the solenoids that actuate the turboes, or the air control valve between primary and secondary, or the turbo wastegates. At 240000km, the turbines have done a lot of work.

    And no you dont have a DPF unless its a grey import. All AU D4 of that year were not fitted with DPF.

    Ok. Forget checking anything until you have codes from the computer. There are endless issues that can cause it and you’ll be here until Christmas v guessing

    Call it an educated guess , I'm well aware there is a myriad of issues on the 3.0 litre , but sometimes believe it or not , as long as you have eyes , there are still things you can physically check as well.

    Some easier to check/fix items that might cause this problem:
    - sticky turbo actuators;
    - small split in turbo hoses;
    - sticky butterfly valves.

    Edit, my response was in the wrong thread.

    You can get your partner in the car. Left foot on brake right foot on throttle in drive and stall it up. That'll at least help you find a leak if there is one
