I've fitted resistors parallel to the indicator circuits on both my trailers and we just did the same to the next door neighbour's trailer as well. He has a Holden Colorado and without resistors, his indicators flash very fast when his trailer (LED lights fitted). We both borrow each others trailers from time to time (different sizes & functions) and it's easier in our case to have the resistors fitted to the trailers.

I have also modified a trailer plug adapter (7 pin male and female plugs) with a couple of resistors wired between the indicator wires and earth, and all taped up so that you can't really see it for if I ever have to tow another trailer with LED lights but not fitted with resistors. Was a bit weary of doing this as the resistors come with a warning about heat generated - but I have monitored it for a while when using and it doesn't get hot at all. Maybe in a city environment where you use your indicators a lot it might be an issue - but doesn't seem to be a problem here where the indicators don't get a lot of use at all.

I made my own switched unit for in the D4.
Had my own in-line external boxes until I made the mounted / switched unit.

I’ve been looking at making it automated switching, and have the solution. Just cannot be bothered - easier to flick the switch.

Good question. There is a very long thread (33 pages of) at < Discovery 3 LED trailer lights > relating on this for the earlier Discovery 3 models. Amongst it is some Discovery 4 specific discussion but it does get lost within the volume etc. I haven't seen anything specific to your question in there but I'd assume that if the trailer light is on on the dash then the vehicle is in trailer mode with everything adjusted to suit.

What electronic setup and switch did you go for? DIY or off the shelf product?

Off topic, but relating to all this:

Tombie does make up some electronic boxes that can be fitted to the vehicle to resolve it. I've flicked him a few messages to purchase over previous months but not heard back. Instructions for DIY are also included in that thread.

    Alternative options are:

Auto Elec Oz offer ELECTRONIC LED TOWING MODULE | AutoElecOz which looks to be a neat fitment.

These mobs offer a device that goes inline between the trailer and vehicle electrical connections - Land Rover Discovery 4 / LR4 (L319) LED Towing Adaptor Module and Buy Now: Linear Electronic Design - personally I'd rather have a single solution on the vehicle than one for each of the trailers which are shared over multiple different vehicles.

There's two other on vehicle fitment options that I've seen but cannot find links to right now.

For down here in Tasmania flat 7 plugs are the norm on trailers, but the D4 has round plugs - so perhaps an adapter with the built in resistors and a strong magnet on the box to secure it to the metal draw bar of the trailer would be a relatively convenient solution.

Been a bit busy of late..... there’s the wife’s 90 in pieces getting some upgrades and she’s red hot on it getting back together soon.
