Disco 4 motor insurance premium just spiked 25%...alternatives?

I recently insured my Defender 110 with Shannons, who gave me a realistic agreed replacement value rather than what 'The Red Book' says it is worth. When the renewal come through for my 2011 D4, which I had insured with another well known insurance company, the premium had gone up and the agreed value had dropped substantially. I rang Shannons and they once again beat the competitor with a much better agreed value and cheaper policy. They then gave me a further discount on my original Defender 110 policy !

With most insurance companies, not only can it pay off to shop around to confirm price is still good, but also a good idea to get another online quote with the same insurer as most new online policies get a discount compared to the automatic renewal.

I regularly did this with the RACWA - every 12 months take out a new policy online and let the old policy get cancelled.

This also gives you a chance to re-tweak the insured value and excess options.

I was hoping when you said 'motor' insurance there were people prepared to cover the crank/bearing issue. Should start a Disco Stokvel.

Insurance companies are full of ****. If you do find one way below the others when you're shopping around (I'm looking at you Youi)... they've usually factored this discount into the cost of acquiring new business and over time they gradually increase the premiums back to where the general market is... they hope you get switching and arguing fatigue and just pay the bill when it arrives. A whole industry against the individual does become rather tiring after a while.

Whilst insurance companies may be full of ****.... so are most ‘insured’.

It’s an industry where the customer expects everything, often lies or deceives the insurer, fails to read the details and then complains when the insurer (essentially a bookie) pushes back.

Shannon’s have my vehicle insured for agreed value for the same price I found most would do market.

I’ve just made a claim, totally painless and approved quickly. Choice of workshop without any stress.

If you read my post DJ I did ring them and discuss it. Ended up dropping the sum insured a bit for a smaller premium and am reasonable happy to renew tomorrow. I have had had quotes before from the type that quote great rates for seniors etc etc and have maintained my cover with the RAC (Reject All Claims) as we used to call them when I worked in insurance moons ago as an engineering underwriter. :)

All insurance companies try to get you in with a cheap first year premium and then jack it every year, assuming most people just pay it.
It's a good idea to get half a dozen online quotes, and then ring them and see if they can each better the others.
If you already have some insurances with a particular company they may do a discount bundle.
Also try increasing the excess and see how much the premium falls.
Youi offer reductions if the vehicle is used less frequently.
Club 4x4 is said to give best cover in remote locations, but to be more expensive.
Our daughter used to work for an insurance broker and reckoned Suncorp gave the best service when claims were made.
It really does pay to shop around.

Club 4x4 won’t cover water crossings and won’t cover electrical fires.

Wouldn’t touch them with a 10’ pole
