    Suspension lifetime

    Hi all,

Possibly my imagination, however I think my trusty steed is wallowing and leaning when cornering more than it used to. 185k

It’s had new front LCAs recently, but that’s where it ends in terms of suspension refreshment since new in 2010.

What are people finding is the typical life on the struts, rear LCA, tie rods etc? Are there other wear parts too?

Part of me is tempted to just bite the bullet and get the whole lot done at once...

Everything I've read after someone has changed struts says "feels so much better" etc etc.
And I can detect a lessening of performance these days (some wallowing).
So I'm going for all new struts at 125k (6 years)
I'd rather have more usage with tight suspension than run the struts completely into the ground.

    Cheers,
    Scott

Mine have done 190,000km and still work fine on normal roads - rattle a bit offroad so need replacing but are still OK for everyday use. Offroad they rattle more going downhill and less uphill.

I think 10 years is about the expected life of a strut. That’s when I changed the front assemblies on my 2007 L322.

After removing the old ones, it was obvious one strut was dead and the other almost dead.

The airbag springs had a little more life in them but not worth the risk, as about to do a road trip.

Changed them over with new Delphi strut assemblies.

Nothing is ‘wrong’ at 240k kms MY08 but it’s the next big job on my list to do the 4 struts as I sense some extra bounce from time to time and nothing lasts forever. Reality is the new ones will feel completely different because I’m so used to these.

Cheap to do sway bar bushes and link arms also at same time.

The arms are generally fine if your front LCAs are replaced when needed.

I think EAS does a good job at compensating for a failing strut.

My MY14 D4 has 212,000km on its original suspension. I too have noticed some wallowing recently. Almost an instability, wanting to rock from side to side when lane changing at freeway speeds. Will investigate soon...

Failures in the EAS generally mean leaks and sinking car overnight. At some point though the shockies have to wear out but the genuine equipment seems exceptionally robust and long lived.

The reality of any dampener is around 100k.

The comments above reinforce the degradation as gradual and almost unnoticed as owners adapt.
Reality is by 100k the dampener is well degraded.
