If you have a multimeter handy and are familiar with its use - pull the relay off that plug where all the wires join up and test across all four pins for continuity between two pins. You should not be able to get a circuit no matter which combination of pins you test with the meter. If you do make a circuit, then there is definitely a short circuit either in the plug base or in the wiring loom itself.

Update: unit replaced immediately on warranty and new one works perfectly
