Park brake fault on steep climb

    Folks,
Seeking your collective wisdom. I was climbing a very steep fire access track on the weekend with 1.3tonne camper trailer in tow. About a kilometre into the climb I got an orange dash warning light advising of park brake fault. It was a hard climb and things were bouncing around a lot. I was in low range, rock climb mode with HDC on. Trailer has Redarc tow pro, which was set pretty high. Once I got to the top I tried to clear the fault on the dash, but was unable to. It cleared when I turned off and restarted. The EPB seems to be working normally and I had no further issues on the drive home. Interested in whether people have experienced similar and what the issue might be, and then what the fix might be. EPB service or something more serious?

Separately, on the way down the same track the previous day I had the brakes literally smoking. Again, low range, HDC and tow pro set high. Just wondering if I was doing anything wrong, other than going down a hill that was too steep.

    Thanks.

I have had this happen, and all i could put it down to was dirt and crap had gotten into the park brake shoes. the fault cleared as you describe and returned again going back thru the same section of dusty dirt road.

Maybe worth giving the rear a good clean out.

Keen to know why HDC was turned on for an uphill battle?
And need to ask was the Tow Pro in the green "off road" mode?
And yes, agree with Bulletman to clean out and adjust the handbrake shoes as per the brake bible. Matti

Mine brought up the orange light on and off for probably 12 months.

Eventually I replace the park brake switch and it went away for good.

Be carefull because it also disabled the hand brake completelywhich wasn’t fun with the van on.

Funny thing was a mate and I in the Vic HC a month or so ago. Mine is a MY11 and his a MY14. Both going up a steep-ish hill and we both got the same e-brake warning at exactly the same spot on the hill. Fault cleared fine with the IIDTool and never returned.

As far as HDC on up-hills @Matti4556, my advice would be to always have this on in steep terrain. It does not impair anything on the way up, but if you stop or the motor stalls etc, it is already on in case you start heading backwards!

Absolutely. HDC is a life saver if your forward progress stops

If you had HDC on you were probably using the cars brakes only, hence the hot brakes.

I don't think the brake controller would operate the trailer brakes without you using the foot brake!

Correct. It uses the brake lights to activate the brake controller and I don’t believe when HDC is trailing you down a hill that the brake lights apply, hence the trailer brakes won’t activate either.

So yes, if you’re towing, even with HDC, you would want to apply the foot brake slightly to get the trailer brakes working.

Below is an article on how the Redarc modes work plus how to engage them.

Pretty sure it comes on by default when rock crawl is selected.

Pretty sure brake lights do come on when HDC is activated.
