So I've just bought a D4 HSE and it has beautiful black 20" rims but only Hankook highway tyres. Long term love to get some 18" Moabs etc but right now that's out of the question, so wondering what peoples thoughts are who have had 20" AT tyres for some time?
I know this gets brought up a fair bit but haven't seen a recent thread?
Really wish they made Pirelli Scorpion AT Plus in 265/50/20! I've had them on my Prado for a few years and love them.
I've had pirelli scorpion aT, AT Plus, Cooper AT3, and BFG (the worst tyre I've ever owned in the wet), over the last 20 years or so 4wding but never Monsta, Nitto or Hankook.
Love to hear thoughts from people with 20"

I wish the AT+ was available in the D5 size 255/60R19 LI 113 the same as their Verde All Season, having found their 275/55R20 LI 113 AT+ more than acceptable for my usage but a little too oversize on my L322.
A brother has 265/50R20 Nittos on his MY08 RRS which aren't too bad but would like more sidewall.

We have Nitto Terra Grapplers in a 265 on 20's. We also have a set of 18's that get put on when we are doing a trip. 18's are easier to get hold of remotely. The Nitto's though have been a very good tyre.
I opted to run all terrains as we were living in the Territory at the time and it's not uncommon for a road to become dirt, and then something that resembles a track or whatever. They have been off road - beach, tracks, 4wd playgrounds, etc.. - been used for towing our van, both on and off road.
They replaced the standard Pirellis at about 60k kms, the car is about to hit 140k KMs. Take out say 25k KMs (estimate)for the 18s that do the remote trip stuff and I would say they are approx 50% tread left and still a effective tyre.
Something to note; a lot of people have complained that the Nitto's are noisy, wear weird and don't handle wet roads well. When we were up north, there were zero issues with wet weather. Driving to and from Darwin during tropical lows and getting caught in sudden storms did not present the problems other people were experiencing. Same can be said for winters down in SA. The noise thing has just started to become a thing, but I only notice it on smooth highways around 100kmh. Wearing weird.. nothing different to the standard tyres that came off so far.
They are well priced and Nitto do off road or race track type tyres. And being American, they do all the cool yet weird sizes.
I was so impressed that I put a set of 285/75 16 on my RRC.

Also, the tyres on the 18s are the Monsta Terrain Grippa in 265/60 18. Never had any issues with them and they have completed the CSR.
Well priced..

When i had my D4 I put a set of 265 50 20 Nitto Terra Grapplers which i was very happy with.
Slightly bigger than standard, extra width helped protect the rims.

From memory they were good in the wet but that was on the highway most of the time.
Certainly were very good in heavy rain on the Hume at 110

Its kind of hard to compare them directly due to the size difference.
Niether are LT rated, which I dont find to be a issue. The Monsta's are XL load rated at 114 and the Nittos at 111. Also to note that the Nittos are on 20" alloy rims, compared to the 18" TuffAnt steel rims, so they ride different either way.
The Montas arent noisey and that is probably reflected in the tread pattern having more of a road bias, where the Nittos are more of a block pattern. The Nittos we have are the now G1's, where the G2 is now available with a slightly different tread pattern. I feel the Monstas are slightly better on sand and dont dig as much when accelerating from a stand still. Both shed a lot of water when on the highway, even at the NT's 130km/h and I have only experienced a couple of aquaplaning events, but we are talking about big puddles on dodgey sections of road.
The Monsta's have a little bit more sidewall protection and you can flip the tyres for a different pattern on each side (same with Nitto).
I brought the Monsta's at the time due to a budget constrant before a big trip and I took the chance on them as we were about to do the CSR. I dont regrete it as they havent let me down, not even a puncture, but I am a bit dubious about the level of support. I havent seen many retailers who sell them. I brought them from Ozzy Tyres (dont do it to yourself) as they met my budget requirements. Upon replacement I will go to the Nitto's. TyrePower and BobJane both sell Nitto and I am sure there are a few more better known companies so I have a bit more confidence in having any issues sorted, not that I have ever had any in any tyre in my driving life time.
When either tyre is good to be replaced I will go one size up also; 65 in the 18 and 55 in the 20. Just a little more protection.
Show us some pictures when you decide which way to go.
