Question Reducing towball height with Mitch Hitch receiver

We're finding since fitting the Mitch Hitch < Mitchell Bros Hi-Rise Tow Hitch – Mitchell Bros 4x4 - Mitch Hitch > to our D4 the towball height is too high for our trailers (standard road type trailers - not offroad - 2x boats, 1x box and 1x horse float) - the trailers are on an angle, not level and they seem to be a bit more floaty when towing as a result.

    According to Mitch Hitch:

    • Raises the height by approx 200mm from standard for discovery 3.
      • 150mm for Discovery 4 and Ranger Rover Sport.

    • Puts the pin centre at approx 500mm from the ground (level surface).
When installing the Mitch Hitch I inverted the tower tounge too which I believe changes it from an 19mm riser to 50mm dropper? Therefore would need an 131mm dropper (81mm change in height + the current 50mm drop) to bring it back to the old height? So either a 100mm or 150mm dropper would likely be close enough.

I was thinking of trying one of the Andersen Stinger Alloy Hitches:
4"/100mm drop - Andersen Tow Hitch Alloy Stinger 100mm drop (4") | Everything Caravans
6"/150mm drop - Andersen Tow Hitch Alloy Stinger 150mm drop (6") | Everything Caravans

The steel units that I've come across seem to have a low rating - e.g. the Mister Hitches one only have a 2268kg.

    Or any other recommendations?

Not interested in one of the bit bulky adjustable height units.

Tombie posted pics in the “what’s happened to your D3/4 today” thread of his adjustable height receiver. It looks exactly what your after. I’ll post a link to thread on that one

i use a D2 dropped version towball to tow my brick - about 550 mm from ground to centre of ball from memory. D2 drop version has a 250 kgm ball weight limit, which suits me fine as I prefer to only use 6% of my 3.5T onto ball weight.

Plus with LLAMS I can drop a little lower if needs be.

Pretty sure Tombie's will be the same as my Titan hitch

    ^^x2 Agreed

A standard D2 hitch has a 130mm drop so sounds ideal for you & I'm sure there's someone on the forum with a spare one that is only cluttering their garage so price should be right also.

Reducing towball height with Mitch Hitch receiver

Yep. You need one of these!

Best thing I’ve ever used, can tweak the trailer nose height for optimum angle.

Interesting the comments re the D2 tow bars being a dropped setup. When I bought mine used (circa 2011) it just came with the usual type installed:

But looking one up on CarSales.com.au I see what you mean:

Our trailers vary in weight from the lightest at 400kg empty to the heaviest at around 2,000kg loaded but I'd still rather use components that are rated for the maximum towing capacity to avoid any unnecessary weak links.

The D2 dropped one is rated at 3500kg.

Hi - did you end up getting the Anderson? Would love to see a photo of how they fit into Mitch Hitch. Facing similar issue with wanting a lower height but not a bulkier multi stage drop shank. Thanks

Any tow bar installer will have a range of suitable height and load rated tongues to suit.
