    EPB Adjustment.

A couple of weeks ago I went to reverse out of the garage but the EPB didn’t disengage. I toggled it on and off a number of times until it did disengage. Next time it wouldn’t disengage and I ended up driving through it.

So I decided to adjust the EPB today. Bodsy’s Brake Bible didn’t say which way to turn the adjustment ratchet to tighten it. Turning the ratchet towards the centre seemed to tighten it. I just couldn’t get it anywhere near tight enough to stop 60nm of torque. The tightest I could get it was still quite easy to turn with a normal length socket ratchet handle. In terms of “clicks” I couldn’t tell the difference between a click and the screwdriver slipping off the teeth. I left them at the tightest I could get them and the EPB will now engage and disengage but have no idea how well it is adjusted. Seemed so easy when I read about it.

You may want to disassemble next weekend and grease it all up also.

I’ll bet it hasn’t been done in a long time.

If your uneasy with adjustment and feel..

I recommended pulling off the disc and getting used to it while you can see the mechanism. Then you will be able to tell the difference between a slip and a turn.

Plus you may be out of meat on the shoes.

The adjuster should bottom out and become unable to be adjusted any further..
You will find the spot where to grab the adjuster with the tool. That's the only spot you will get a turn from. Any more or less and it'll slip.. Disc off and have a watch while your doing it

A horrible thing which I hate. But decided to do it myself a couple of weeks ago and had to lay on the ground alongside the car with a small torch to check where the spring was etc. I did it but really wasn't 'appy so got Dover's Rovers to have a look and they checked/adjusted it.
I can hear it working well when inside the carport as the sounds come off the walls and having defective hearing (l/h side particularly for some reason ) it's now making much more positive noises.

PS. I had the thing replaced under warranty a year or so ago when the lot fell apart as I took off from lights not far from home..... and I wasn't using the drive through method of release. mutter mutter mutter.

He says it in Version 1.6a but not Version 1.4 which I was using. Thought I was going crazy. Re-read multiple times and couldn’t find any mention of the spring. Now have V1.6a so all is right with the world.

It’s a bit mind boggling doing it at ground level with each side 180 degrees opposite orientation and looking in the dark hole for the knurled winder location. It’s a joy to do on a hoist.

Generally, very quickly though you will find which way locks the disc till you can’t turn it with a socket on the hub nut. That’s what you are looking for then come back a bit and remember to give it a whack with a rubber mallet during the process to make sure it’s all centred and evenly balanced including when you back off the Alen key retainer which is another challenge to find in the dark hole.

All that getting up and down to and from the prone position gets harder as you get older. I now find it's easier to shuffle around on my hands and knees from one side to the other doing jobs like that.
Or leave it to an indy to hoist it up and do it instead.

If I had the room and the Cooks approval, that's what I do.
