Thread: Disco 3 Poor Dashboard Lighting

There is no daylight lighting, it comes on with the lights like most vehicles.

I've done a bit of research. I think the dash illumination is controlled by the ambient daylight sensor located next to the alarm indicator.

"AMBIENT LIGHT SENSORAn ambient light sensor is located in the instrument cluster, adjacent to the alarm indicator. The ambient light sensor is aphototransistor which measures the available ambient light.The phototransistor measures the ambient light (lux) level and passes a signal value for the available light level to theinstrument cluster microprocessor. The instrument cluster software adjusts the display brightness of the message centerand information display LCD's accordingly to ensure that the displays are clearly visible during day and night time driving."

interestingly the dash illumination comes on in the dark but not very brightly. Could be the microprocessor?

You sure on that - my RRS (D3 equivalent) there is backlighting on when the headlights are off and when the headlights come on the dash back lighting dims so not to blind you when it gets dark outside.

But I accept maybe different in a RRS.

Hmm. I agree. My D4 is daylight illuminated.

Photo 1 daylight, headlights off. Photo 2 night, headlights on. Only a subtle dimming for nighttime dependent on the adjustment dial.

Using the dash illumination roller switch gives very limited increase in illumination. All the warning lights come on okay.

I agree, old D3 screen very poor and much worse than my D4. I think it's normal for the older style little green screens.

Thanks all for you inputs. I am going to investigate the dashboard back lighting and dash illumination switch. Will give an update when done.
