High milage SDV6

So here goes my comments re my 300,000km plus D4 servicing.

When I purchased the D4 in 2011 it was purchased on a commercial arrangement via the firm I was working for at the time. LR asked for a service every 13,000km with that purchase.
Out of interest I took a look at the service documents from LR (same document as attached in Tin's response below and also the doc that I have attached) Attachment 169710and made the choice to have the vehicle serviced by the Whyatt's Land Rover team in Geraldton every 13,000km. In between each of those 13,000km services I replace the engine oil and filter at 6,500km or thereabouts at home and have a poke around. Hence my comment re arduous service schedule.
The folks at Whyatt's have looked after the vehicle all this time and have proven knowledgable, reliable and diligent in their work.[bigsmile1]

The vehicle has mostly done highway km's. When I was working (semi retired now) my daily round trip to and from work was approximately 120km. The K's clocked up pretty quickly.

You sure can argue that I over service the vehicle but I have always done so with every vehicle I have ever owned.

I like to think that if I need to jump in the vehicle and drive to Melbourne I can do so without any mucking around. Considering that Melbourne around 3700km from where I live I reckon you'll get the picture!

Whilst changing oil and filters every 3 months is what you do, I cannot see how that makes your car any more reliable that you can just jump in it anytime and go to Melbourne with no concerns. My car has scheduled services at 26K and that is what I get the Indi to do. He also is aware of how I use my car and that I do a service at 13K which includes checking and adjusting the hand brake, checking and replacing brake pad and/or rotors, oil and filters. I have replaced the diff and transfer case oils at 80K myself and had the auto oil replaced by the auto specialist who does rebuilds in Dandenong of our gearboxes. Everytime I go away on a long trip or a tough 4wd weekend, I generally pray and cross myself hoping the bitch wont let me down. So far all good. But I still have that nasty nagging feeling of LR reliability being questionable. Regular servicing or not!

Like I said......I have done a high level of servicing....(or over servicing as you would no doubt have it).....with every car I have ever owned!

I guess my first car, a good old 64 EH Holden, didn't know what hit it!

Anyhow looking around the vehicle as I do when I do my intermediate service tends to let me come to grips with things as they change. It also helps to make me feel good about the D4.

The only real reliability issue I have had has been the brake light switch, which, even though I had a spare with me caused me to be towed! In fairness I wonder how many times it had operated in the 299,000 odd kms it lasted!

No doubt I have spent more loot than needed, but hey, I guess you could consider it as support for my local LR team![bigwhistle][thumbsupbig][bigsmile1][biggrin]

If you read some of the threads on this site you would reckon all the D4's and RRS's with 3.0L are about to poop themselves but I reckon a good leveller is checking out some of the YouTube stuff on other brands.....especially those that reckon nothing ever goes wrong!

I'll second that. There's no doubt LRs have quirks that fox people who don't take the time to learn about them, but the big noise mobs from Japan have large issues as well. No machine is perfect.

I’ve had much better luck letting it know it’s on a final warning and the next remedy is a loose high pressure diesel line and a match.

Hi Kiwi and all,

Just to chime in on high km and confidence: while its not a D4, my wonderful 2005 TDV6 D3 has done 517,000 km now and she's still going fine, fit and strong, mostly highway km, but a lot of reasonably roughish off road tracks too. Services at 12,000 km done at home here along with filters and gearbox, diffs, TC fluids etc on schedule; big stuff done by excellent Indie in Wangara, which its had over time - drive belts, all suspension, coolant. While its a manual gearbox D3, the rest of it is similar and maybe its longevity will help inspire confidence. I do speak to and thank her often, I reckon that helps her confidence too...

My two bobs worth. There is one common thread quite often seen when researching the reliability and history of our modern motor vehicles. It seems to apply regardless of the country of origin. The common thread is when the manufacturer involved extends the service interval for general servicing, it often leads to more issues with the motors, particularly double overhead cam. There is an old saying that goes something like this . ' you won't kill a motor from overservicing, but you surely will from neglect ' Mine gets oil and filter every 6-8000, and I am happy to do it. Other servicing is generally as per the recommended intervals. For the sake of a bit of oil and a filter, I can't see any issue.
