RR Sport wheels on LR3...nut issues

    Hi all,
I’ve just bought my first Land Rover, a 2005 Disco 3. I’ve bought some RR Sport (275/40/20) Stormer wheels to go on it but having some issues with the wheel nuts.
I was told by my local tyre fitter that the nuts on the original disco wheels (tapered) would not work with the new wheels and I’d need to get OEM shank and washer ones or “your wheels will fall off!”. I called around a couple of main dealers. One refused to help unless I knew the VIN of the Sport the wheels came off. One told me they had no stock of them anywhere in Australia, and one told me they only had black ones (which are precisely double the cost of silver ones!)
Places like super cheap auto stock shank and washer nuts but the tyre fitter didn’t think that was a good idea.

Can anyone shed any light on this please? Is it best to shell out for OEM ones, is there any way to find out the part number so I order the right things or will the super cheap auto ones do the job?

The wheels are OEM and were previously fitted to a 2010 RR Sport if that helps.

    I can shed some light.

RRS wheels aren’t legal or load rated for a D3…

Really? They’re off a 2010 RR sport which is listed as 2460kg and the Disco 3 listed as 2461kg.

That is not relevent - you need to check Gross Vehicle weights, but in particular the axle that has the highest load rating (usually the rear) - so as a minium what ever wheel you use it will need to have a load rating of at least half of the max load rating of the rear axle, with a tad more thrown in for safety.

    This thread might help.

    Thanks for that.

From what I can find, the gross vehicle weight is 3230kg and the rear axle load rating is 1870kg. The RR Sport wheels are rated at 1025kg each (2050kg total) so should be ok?
I’ll not be towing anything or filling it with lead.

That’s a good result. Early RRS wheels are 840kg

Does your D3 have steel or alloy rims? If alloy then I would expect the nuts to fit the RRS rims but if steel then see if you can get a set of D3/D4/RRS alloy wheel nuts from a LR wrecker.

The D3/D4/RRS nut part number is RRD500510 (now LR068126) but don't get the extra cheap ones as their threads are too loose.

Where did you get that from? Seems at least 100kg higher than other genuine RRS wheels.

1025kg is stamped on the back of the spokes on each wheel and they’re definitely OEM confirmed by the seller and the main dealer I went to.

The original wheels were 18 inch alloys and the wheel nuts were identical (one of the main dealers sent me a photo of the RR Sport ones) in case anyone is doing a similar swap.
