For sure Timken. Currently travelling around Aus so won’t be able to diy as have no address. Will ring Darren tomorrow, I’ll be in Perth in about 2 weeks.

I expected a wheel bearing noise to be deeper or something. It’s certainly grindy but rather thin sounding. Does change with wheel speed.

If not wheel bearing, could also be what I had, albeit at twice that mileage. Took a while to isolate where the noise was coming from, but was front diff bearing. With only 800 ml of oil, I'm surprised we don't get more diff issues.

Good point Gav, but I doubt a front diff bearing would cause play in the hub when push-pull at 12 and 6 as Scott mentioned.

Scott, lets hope you dont have a catastrophic bearing failure.

Volume was only really for cooling capacity in older oils. Keep ‘em cool or they would break down their chains and eat the diff.

Modern oils, casing materials and design can mean less is required, and can sustain the loads imposed.

I’d be going for “deliver to xyz post office or freight depot”. I’d you’ve got that much movement I wouldn’t be risking catastrophic failure.

I’ve had a front wheel bearing lock solid with no more than 30 seconds warning. Threw the vehicle across the road and did thousands of dollars damage to the driveline.

Don't know if you are South or North of Perth, but if you are around Albany , you are welcome to use tools etc. I'm too flat out to get you in but it won't take you long and you really don't want it letting go.
