I still have my old Hitch. But the reason I changed was three fold. One, with bigger tyres than stock it was hard (impossible) to remove the spare tyre without removing the hitch. Two, with an off road van the tow hitch/ball is too low. 3 The hitch sticking out acts as a rear bumper bar protector for car parking or bad driving.

There was/is nothing wrong with the old hitch other than I had a lot of trouble removing it because I did not service it for about 2years

    Standard tow bar

Like other members, I've got the standard tow bar, and made many offroad trips towing a camper trailer (~1T) over 10years - Cape York, Fraser Island, Pilbara WA etc.
Have never experienced an issue with it (touch wood!).

    In with the crowd

As per others responses I use the standard Land Rover tow set up on my D4.

I tow a 3.2t 24ft caravan for trips out and about. A 2t tandem trailer for my farm stuff and at times a small trailer tanker, 1.3t for a bit of weed spraying.

I have looked at the alternatives and, for my use, just don't see the need!

Yes I do check behind the coupling pocket to make sure the locking tab is fully home when I have removed the hitch for servicing.

All considered the LR hitch set up works just fine for me.

Went with the Mitch Hitch to get the height for our off road van.
Wasn’t cheap, but I figure when the time comes I can always remove it, and sell it to someone on AULRO, and recoup some of my spend.
Have also kept the original LR hitch. Can always sell it, too.

I have used both. I reckon the standard hitch works a treat and would only change if you want additional departure angle.

This is the part which BMkal and I have flattened which allows the hitch pin to go just that little further in. I ground it down and repainted it and feel that it's that bit more secure in the housing now.
