Question Replacement windscreen - anyone gone with non-genuine, if so, how was it?

Has anyone actually had a non-genuine front windscreen fitted to their Discovery 3 or 4? If so, how was it?

Having done a search through here on windscreen replacements there's post after post about replacing with genuine windscreens (Pilkington Opticool) and how to get your insurance company to do so. There's a number of posts about the issues that current D3/4 owners had with non-genuine Windscreens in their D2's. But I've only found two posts from someone who actually went the non-genuine route which read:

Oh the joys of living in the country.

The insurer was not involved at this stage as I had well and truly exceeded any 'free' allocation. Also by this time I was not convinced that the genuine article was up to the job. It only had to see a stone coming at it and it cracked. Usually at the centre base of the screen. Hence I and my bank account gladly installed a generic (read cheaper) windscreen.

The truth of the matter is that in practice I can't tell the difference from a heating or cooling perspective and since the 'el-cheapo' was installed I have had a number of stone hits and guess what? It has not broken!

So give me the generic but seemingly stronger screen and I am happy!

Good things come in glass! Go China!

I cant tell the difference other than for the fact that this windscreen doesn't break at the drop of a hat like the four previous genuine ones did!

Interested to hear anyone elses experiences of non-genuine front windscreen replacements.

It is really hard because all these posts anchor your view that the after market ones are massively inferior.

Given the price difference, I went aftermarket, even if it was terrible it would not be a great loss given the oem price. The cheapest I could find was $400 but obrians was 700 or so, so went with that.

Honestly now, I can't tell. At the time, I thought it was noisier but my judgement would have been biased.

BUT Obriens did not use oem clips as they promised to do and the A piller covers came off. To their credit, they did fix.

I'm on my second Saint Gobain aftermarket windscreen on my D4. No issues to date. Fitted by my local O'Brien's. Hope this helps.

I'm on my 6th front windscreen, ie 5 screen replacements. Yeah I'm rock magnet. 1 was genuine, 1 was OEM glass the other 3 were after market brands, 2 of which I don't remember the manufacture's name. The current glass is Saint Gobain, mentioned above.

I have not been able see any difference between any of them other than the branding down in the corner of the glass.

Oh yeah, have also smashed the rear glass, fitted with an after market brand also. Good as the original. Quite frankly you could not actually source original rear glass in the country within a reasonable time period even if you wanted it.

Thanks, appreciate hearing about your positive experiences. The price difference is extreme, we live rurally and seem to be replacing a front windscreen every two years or so. But the biggest factor at the moment is that the four windscreen replacement shops in Hobart can't advise a time frame on obtaining a genuine front windscreen, were an aftermarket unit (an acoustic model with the rain sensor) is available by the end of this week. The crack has gotten half way along the windscreen now and the driver (wife) advises there's some water coming through so I'd prefer to not leave it longer than necessary.

I have a newly fitted aftermarket screen from insurance company. The installer knew the job. Did a great job and left.. The only issue was the screen looked dirty for a while. I had to clean the inside with " wax and grease remover" now it's sweet. I hit an owl yesterday. He didn't live which is very unfortunate. Bit the windscreen did. I expected a crack for sure. Fuyoa or something is the brand

It really is not a concern!

Tis interesting to be quoted after all this time......I am now on windscreen 6 (I think)......anyhow that last replacement ended up being a genuine LR jobby. My el cheapo china made screen ended up being replaced after another severe stone hit whilst highway travelling. Oh...the joys of my rural lifestyle. As things turned out a replacement LR screen was to hand and fitted by my local LR service agent. The insurance met the cost bar their $100 windscreen excess. Personally I don't think it make any difference what brand you fit.......opticool......personally I can't tell the difference.......my D4 is a 2011 model with 311,000+km on the clock and still goes as it should no matter who's windscreen is fitted.

I've posted a few times on this. Both times a non-genuine screen was put in my vehicles (L319 and L320), I knew instantly on getting in the car. More heat and glare, and less sound proofing. I'm an emphatic yes for genuine. Sorry!!!
