    Music on the go.

2012 Disco 4 HSE. I am not a great lover of radio stations (too many ads) and as a result I always listen to my favourite music stored on various USB sticks. This way I have access to several thousand tracks that do not take up much room.

For a while I had problems with “file not found” or freezing before start of particular songs. The only way to fix this was to remove stick, wait a while and reinstall, bypass song and wait for the next failure and do it all again PITA.

I finally thought I had better try and resolve this. I first thought problem with system but was tested and found to be ok. I would then erase stick reformat, and reinstall music…Same. Different brand/size of stick…Same.

Long story short turned out to be Kbps rate at which I had recorded some music ie 320 kbps. I reduced this to 180 kbps (my hearing couldn’t tell the difference) problem finally sorted, no more missing files or frozen system. For some reason my system can’t play songs at a bit rate of 320 kbps.

I also overcame hiccup on number of files it would read by installing no more than 1024 songs in folders on USB stick. Can now fill up stick with several folders.

That's all covered in the handbook, Pete. But I agree it's a clumsy system. And it seems to be hit and miss as to which files the head unit accepts. I gave up using a usb stick and still have an iPod connected permanently! Every now and again I get bluetooth to work so can play stuff from my Android phone.

Try as I might I can find nothing in my book as regards to the bit rate and number of files I can store in a folder, whereabouts in the manual does it say that?

I rip all my CD's to 320kps as it seems to be the ideal rate for decent sound V file size, my android head unit has no issues playing them but interesting that the D4 cant play them.

Well that’s interesting, mine is on page 325 and doesn’t say that at all. Mine is a Harmon Kardon system in a 2012 and I think yours is a 2013 Maybe the difference?

Goodness knows! Yes, mine is a 2013 TDV6 with a sound upgrade to the HK, but the manual covers all models.

Have you loaded the upgrade using Gap for the stereo? May well fix your connectivity issues
