    Steering rack shaft guide?

    Hey brains trust,

The bushings/guides on my steering rack are shot which is causing a knock. It’s the final grey part that the shaft runs through before it comes out of the rack. The rack performs fine but the shaft knocks on the casing especially on drivers side.
I don’t believe they can be replaced so I’m wondering if anyone has fixed the issue by pushing a new bushing in to sit beside the original one?

Picture is not from a disco but this is the idea.

Interesting! I still have a little bit of a knock and was wondering where else it might be from. I’ll have e to take a look. How does one diagnose?

Front end off the ground, full lock and pull on the tie rods in axial and radial direction on the side with max extension. If they clunk, the bushings are shot.

    AF do a meyhle kit.....

Update: the kit is for tie rod ends and boots only, not the entire rack. KIT623M Meyle Track Rod Kit Discovery 4 2010- Left & Right LR010667 x 2

You can also get a complete new rack, but $$$$$ part no is LR080152 RHD

I live in Arnhem Land so it’s all DIY for me unfortunately. A rebuild is unfortunately out of the question.
I can’t see a meyle kit on AF but I’m interested if one exists. If not I’m tempted to try measuring the OD of the shaft and ID of the rack and maybe find something for a different car that’ll fit.

I was certain it was my right inner track rod knocking in the ball joint. Replaced it and didn’t make a difference. It was afterwards when I got someone to thrash the steering side to side while I peered into the end of the rack that I realised the bush was busted.

Are you able to remove the rack and send it away to get refurbished?

I do appreciate the suggestion and yes, it would be possible to remove the rack and send away however shipping cost alone would be somewhat prohibitive, plus I can’t afford for the car to be off the road for that long.

Hence the original query - considering the rack is fine in all other aspects can new bushes be pushed in next to the original ones? I think it’s probably possible and for about a $30 trial and error exercise I’m going to have a crack.

I haven’t made the measurements yet but something similar to this might work.

Fair call. I'd give the superpro bushing a shot.

Are the racks made by Delphi/TRW ? if so can probably find something local that will fit - bushes i mean.
