    2005 Disco 3 TDV6 Engine Rattle

Looking for some help before I book in with the mechanic. Yesterday while driving home I noticed a high pitch rattle coming from the engine when I had the window down. No issues accelerating. Seems to be most noticeable when idling. I popped the bonnet and seems to be coming from the bottom of the engine at the front. Any suggestions as to what might be the cause?

Hopefully just the bearing in the belt tensioner is on its last legs, which if the cause will need to be replaced promptly. The whole tensioner is replaced rather than just the bearing as the pivot in the tensioner wears which causes the belt to not run true. Best to replace idler pulleys at the same time too.

Another vote for the belt tensioner. I've had similar in the past where the tensioner part has basically failed and it rattles around. Check your belt to the alternator as you'll see it twisted (the belt that is)slightly if it's the cause

Thanks! Do you just do one tensioner or both of them? It certainly matches where the sound is coming from. Worth buying a viscous spanner for?

There's only 1 tensioner but a couple of idler pulleys.
A couple of sharp taps with a hammer on a light-weight spanner should do the job.

Thanks for the help with the diagnosis team! It was well and truly gone and some. I ended up ordering some viscous spanners from the UK because I didn't want to stuff around. The thing that took the longest was getting the wife to put the new belt on while I swung on the breaker bar...
