I'd be checking the EGR coolers before jumping to conclusions. Can't recommend a mechanic though, sorry.

						Hi All,
Mates brother has a D3 (2.7 TDV6) that has started using a lot of coolant and getting a tad hot. It is still running, doesn't appear to have any oil in the coolant but reports a sweet exhaust smell. He's 1.5 hrs (Mundurah) drive south of Perth, WA. Local mechanic says his engine is stuffed and it's in excess of $10K to replace.
Anybody know of a good LR mechanic in that neck of the woods that he could get a second opinion from?
Cheers,
Kev.

MY08 D3 - The Antichrist - "Permagrimace". Turn the key and play the "will it get me home again" lottery.
x2 on checking the EGR coolers. Not sure there are any LR indies down that way. Closest I know of is RoverTech

Surely the mech can use a sniffer and check for exhaust gases in the coolant before condemning the engine, i'd be bypassing the egr coolers and see how it goes.

I would start at the front, eg, check radiator, even to the extent of a new one
Outback Discovery from YouTube lives down that way. Very capable having swapped a 2.7 and up for projects between swings I believe

Definitely the 2nd best WA YouTuber lol

I live in Mandurah. There is a well respected mech operating just down the road Peel Auto,1/41 Gordon Road ph 95833939 and another unknown at Euro King Auto,4Quarry Way 95816588.
Give me a PM, sure we can bypass the cooler if it's the cause.

Thanks very much mate, that's golden information.
Also, thank you to the other guys that have responded.
Gav's brother hasn't named the original "let's replace the engine guy", but sought a second opinion. This mechanic conducted a pressure test, I'm assuming that was the cooling system and identified the problem as being the water pump, as it leaked a lot under pressure. That's a much cheaper fix and hopefully the job will be done.
I'll definately pass on the numbers you have supplied and will reach out if the EGR turns out to be the problem.
Cheers,
Kev.
