I don't have a definitive answer for that from experience, but based on all the documentation I've read you should see the light from the previous module. If you're not seeing that then that's where I'd start looking.

The D4 wiring diagram has a plethora of configurations, but in general the telephone module gets fed from the RSE, DABS, Portable Audio Interface or TV receiver. It's downstream of the touch screen and usually upstream of the audio amp.

All configurations go Head Unit -> Touch Screen -> Lots of stuff -> Amplifier -> Head Unit. The phone interface is always before the Amp.

The simplest configuration has the Head Unit -> Touch Screen -> Portable Audio Interface -> Telephone -> Amplifier -> Head Unit.

Pages 124->129 of the D4 wiring diagram. It's either in or linked from one of my posts in the D3/4 forum somewhere. I don't have it handy.

    Thanks again.

Yes, I agree, I should be able to see light from both the cable and the unit. I'm not seeing either.

I was looking at the wiring diagrams, probably as you were writing your response. While mine's the HK system, it's got no rear seat entertainment system (RSE), just the phone, CD and amp. Tomorrow will be "chase the light" day.

According to AusPost, the BT unit is about to land on my doorstep, and I think I've found a local ICE specialist who can sort it all out if I can't.

Meantime my mechanic has called to say the water pump needs changing. The money pit keeps on taking.

    SORTED

It's amazing what a little time and patience can achieve.

Fuse 67 replaced. Fibre optic starts working.
Cable to telephone BT module shows red light but BT definitely dark.
Secondhand unit from Triumph Rover in Adelaide cost me $300 with freight to Perth. (Speedy and helpful service - highly recommended!)
Plugged it in, tested, all good. BT took a bit to be seen by my phone - about 30 seconds - but that's normal.

Test phone call produces no sound. Hmmm.

    AV system.
Can't switch modes from radio (nor bands). Touchscreen beeps, but that's it.

Hard reset. Disconnect batteries (crank and aux), short the cables and have a cuppa.

    Reconnect batteries. Voila!

Car starts, throws a few faults, including suspension. Scan and clear with GAP tool.
Test suspension heights ... all good.

SOUNDS! We have SOUNDS! All AV systems work. Phone works.

    Reset clock, windows, reverse mirrors.

    All done before lunch.

Along the way, I picked up an Aerpro MOSTLOOP Fibre optic loop (Aerpro | First Choice). Handy bit of kit.
And to test the touchscreen, which was just showing the LR logo on startup, I was still able to access the "secret menu". This verified that the screen was working, and it has a MOST test, too. Lots of numbers scroll past, but the status told me what I already knew - that the ring had a break in it.

Thanks to all for your input, especially @BradC!
