    Dipstick for a 3L engine

OK, so I'm new to the world of 3L SDV6 engines.
And I'm a little troubled with the lack of a dipstick on an engine, but, yes, I accept that technology continues to improve.
I have always been in the habit of doing a quick check under the bonnet before starting up when ever I go out.
That includes checking the oil level.
Is there any reason why I cant "make a dipstick" which I put down the oil extraction tube?
This will obviously be used and removed, and the cap put back on.
If that is a goer, what would be the best material to use?
I'm thinking plastic coated curtain springwire with a notch or mark for an oil level. Or can anyone think of something else?

    Mate. Don’t worry about it.

Open door, press Start (no brake)
Wait for dash to cycle through.
Go to service menu and check oil level.
(Note it won’t work with bonnet UP, so pop bonnet for physical inspection of engine bay - after)

    Takes like 60 seconds.

Sticking something down that hole won’t give an accurate reading as it’ll drag oil on the way up.

I thought it had to run and warm up before the system would take a measurement????
And then wait 1o mins for it to settle?

That’s the normal, you can get an indicative level from cold doing it the other way.

So far I haven’t seen any difference simply because the engine was hot when parked.

The service manual procedure is to open the bonnet, press start without your foot on the brake (ignition on), wait for the cycle on the dash, go into the service menu, when you get to the oil section, press C (cruise control cancel) twice and it’ll show the current oil level. Oil level will change as you fill with oil if necessary.

Actually I didn’t know that you can get a cold reading either. Thanks Mike
