    Donaldson Pre-Filter TDV6

    Hi guys,

Looking to head out down the Birdsville Track and up the Oodnadatta. Last year when at the Cape, we ended up with a lot of dust in the dust filter and looking to put a Donaldson pre-filter on the snorkel to help prevent this reoccurring.

Can anyone advise what diameter top is needed for the 3.0L TDV6?

    Cheers!!

That will depend on what brand snorkel is fitted.

    Ah cheers.

It’s a safari 3 inch… but my understanding is that the diameter of the Donaldson bowl is optimised to the engine air requirements? I might be wrong!

Personally, I wouldn’t bother / ruin the look of your vehicle.
The air filter is easy enough to give a quick clean if conditions are super dusty. (I also tend to not drive too closely in convoy).

Sorry couldn’t help with the query though ;-)

    Donaldson Pre-Filter TDV6

This is the formula that Donaldson use:

And these are the pre-cleaner sizes:

We run the Donaldson pre cleaners on a number of vehicles, but they seem to need to expand exponentially in size between 150kw and 200kw.

We had one that 10-12 inches across on a 175kw engine, and it kept tripping the low Intake vacuum warning..i.e. too restrictive.

This was at full power though.

I just quickly ran through the calcs (and I'm pretty tired) but it seems like you would need one with over a 3 inch inlet and maybe a foot across.

It also may be very noisy.

They are a great thing though, it's amazing what they remove.

The other option is an aspirator, but they would be pretty difficult to integrate on a car.

"They are a great thing though" Yes they certainly are and I emptied many on vehicles over the years working on mine sites and road jobs. I haven't got one on the D4 and tend to sit back in dusty convoys but will often just gently tap the filter against the wheel at the days end to remove most of the dust.
I once used an oiled air filter on the D1 moons ago.... never ever again is all I'll say about them.

I used one on my 3.0 D4 when meandering along in convoy in dusty conditions but swapped back to a ram head for highway use as I didn't like the noise from the pre-cleaner when the engine was doing much work.
