It’s in the 70kg dynamic range and I think 300kg static. It's roughly in that ballpark. It’s not a lot once you have a rack on it so for a roof top tent, think about how you can minimise the rack weight to tent ratio

SubscriberGreetings all, After farting about with Ford Courier, Mazda BT50 and VW Amarok as campers, I realise I am wasting time. I have a perfectly excellent D4 and want to convert it to a motorhome. Does anyone know how much weight the roof can handle without making the handing dangerous in off-road (or on-road!) situations?
The D4 is just so bloody good to drive........
Thanks for any advice,
Cheers, Paul

Pretty sure 100KG,we had a RTT,HD Rhino rails,and Awning,around 100KG,no issues.
Static is higher,i thought the rule of thumb was 3X.

I put too much up there once, the shocks were also worn which wouldn't have helped, but u only ever did it once, fast roundabouts etc were scary
It is in the owner’s handbook.

SubscriberMany thanks all for your replies. I didn't think of looking in the handbook. Can someone explain please the 3 to 1 ratio? Is that road weight as opposed to off-road weight?
I wasn't planning on a roof-top tent, rather a proper motorhome body with the civilities of bathroom, kitchen etc. I would end up with around 200 kilos on the roof in travelling mode.
Cheers,
Paul

SubscriberThanks, DiscoJeffster, I will need to re-think. I really, really want to try to make this thing happen. Every time I drive the Disco I wonder why I waste time on other buckets of bolts.
Except my Oka.... that is just as good to drive as the Disco, but both my partner and I have torn our rotator cuff muscles - I can still (just) get into the oka, but she can't without great difficulty.
Humph!
