what is this oil around drive shaft

Just got back from a week away playing in the sand dunes of Robe and doing my post trip once over. I’ve noticed this suspicious ring of oil spray from the end of the drive shaft where it connects on to the transmission? Should I be worried?

If its the same as mine then the rubber boot has split where its folded in where it joins onto the drive shaft.. very hard to see as you need to shine a torch between the ring where the 6 bolts on the coupling are and the drive shaft .... you may be able to put your little finger in there and feel the split... its the CV joint grease that is getting flung out the split..

as far as i can tell it looks intact but I'll have another look next time I stop as the top side is easier to see with a scope than the bottom. my prop shaft was replaced just under 2 years ago after the centre bearings went so this should be in pretty good condition still.

Yep in there.. i couldnt see mine was split till i got a paddle pop stick and gentle push on it and the split became evident..

Yours may be different but looks very similar in the pics to what mine did by throwing the grease in the arc on the floor pan above it.. there is actually a thread on here somewhere where i asked the same questi

I ended up dropping the centre bearing bolts and the 6 bolts that hold it to the back of the transfer case and sliding the broken piece thats over the shaft further back and packed the joint with CV grease , slip the broken bit back into place and bolted it back up.. still using it as im waiting for the centre bearing to perish..

Yours may be something different but it certainly looks very similar in the original post pics.

There is nothing fresh there at the moment so if it was a permanent leak it would be wet. I would leave but check regularly.

As 101RRS said there's no fresh grease there, I reckon it's from when your centre bearing let go 2years ago. Give it a clean including the body underside and monitor.

There’s no fresh grease because most of it’s already gone and that joint will be barely lubed.

Agree, clean and observe, although expect lifespan to be reduced on that joint.
