						Hi All,
What are the differences that define the change from Disco 3 to 4?
To my eye they look the same, they had the same engine and transmission at the transition point, so what denotes the change?
Thanks
Tony

Nanocom, D2 TD5 only.
Lights for on road identification. I believe the computer programmes differ.
If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
2009 D4 had different lights and front grill plus the centre console switch positions for hi/low and terrain response were different layout
I think the dash upgrade came 2010/11 but could be wrong on that.
As far as running gear i believe was the same.
Cheers Bulletman
Very broadly:
Largely cosmetic changes in the early D4 models (front grill, lights, Colour coordination of some plastic Trims etc) although some of the D3 engine issues were also addressed)
Then engine and gearbox changes occurred, along with front brake / terrain response changes
The very last 09 D3s had painted wheel arches before switching to D4 which also had the extra fake air intake and totally different grill and lights and bumper details
As others have already mentioned mostly cosmetic items.
Mechanically lots of little things changed, off the top of my head.
location of transfer case control module, front cv different diameter, engine computer brand change along with programming, different engine mounts, different abs, radiator and cooling system change, engine ancillaries change (obviously along with the different v6 diesel), 8 speed on later ones, brakes different.
same rubbish electric handbrake, same rubbish engine reliability, same rubbish build quality, same rubbish support from Land Rover.
Regards
Daz
Going by the responses so far I’d say Clarkson nailed it.Originally Posted by Tins;[URL="tel:3200013"

I think we're understating it a bit...
D4 introduced the 3.0L Twin Turbo, with a stronger 6 speed gearbox. the 2.7L remained in D3 specs.
D4 introduced the spectacular 5.0L V8
Smarter battery charging system on all but the 2.7L
Later D4 Facelift introduced the 8 speed gearbox, and removed the 2.7 and 5.0 engines. A supercharged petrol arrived, also pretty rare.
All but the 2.7L D4 have a minimum 19" wheel (OEM) or 18" if going aftermarket (Tuffant, Moab, etc)
Various computer upgrades as mentioned, though within the D4 world, the earliest car can be flashed to perform like the latest car.
CANBus is upgraded, and no longer flips out if a brake light bulb is blown. In fact, there are no brake lights, now all LED
No longer flips out with trailer LEDs like the D3 did
Suspension etc all seems the same, or close enough across all model years, so they drive basically exactly the same way.
Loadspace is identical
