I've just gotten back from a crossing of the Simpson via the Madigan line and some serious sand.
The original 19's were fine with Maxxis 980 LT. My pressures were down as far as around 18psi at times with no issues on sand or the very chopped up gravel tracks.
After that I wont be spending the money on 18's for the new Defender which will have 20's.
The Maxxis have been great mainly on road with a lot of wet highway driving. A bit noisy initially and that either subsided or I got used to it.
Very timely thread thanks, as i just brought a D4 which has 20inch rims, ideally would prefer 18inch rim, but if anyone knows of any 19inch rims for sale, located Perth WA let me know.
I’m running 285 60 18 with steel Tuff Ants on my D4. Can drive through car parks in access mode. Slightly rubs, mainly on hard right reverse. Very happy
I see that Goodyear have just introduced their Wrangler Duratrac RT which is a "light truck" tyre and it looks good.
I think I'll try them as I've been very happy with the Duratrac.
Due to the different tread pattern they may be slightly quieter than their predecessor which is the only "complaint" I'd make, but having said that, the noise is quite acceptable and doesn't annoy me like some others.
They have become slightly noisy as they've worn but possibly my fault as I've only rotated them once in 55,000 klms and that was only when they'd done 43,000 klms.
My Duratrac are so much quieter than the Maxxis 980 I came from!!! They were horrendous. InterestingQuote:

they are quiet, my tdv6 has 20000km on coopers, they are also quiet and good wet tyres
side wall is the main concern, some gravel, we call em metal in NZ have really sharp stuff out of the crusher/mill up in NW qld

getting some used 19 rims today as the rims on my 2015 are black flashy mall

I came off 19" factory rims to Compo 18's.
The 19's had Pirelli AT's and did fine. No issues in sand, all the way down to 10psi at times.
Switched to Compo 18's when the tyres wore out, mostly on the advice that 18's are easier to find in the regions.
Tyre of choice for me is still Pirelli Scorpion AT+ 265/60R18.
The biggest issue I've had, and it may be my driving style, is that I have peeled the 18's on the front on at least two occasions. The Compo's don't have that legendary bastard grippy bead the factory 19's do.
I've learned the hard way, and not done it for a while. Very happy with the setup now.
And I was able to move on the 19's with tyres on the secondhand market easy enough.
