But that isn't related to the tensioner issue of the earlier models.

Correct, it wasn't a tension failure. The tensioner and belt held up just fine. The spokes of the metal cam pulley failed.

Anyways, the point I was seeking to make is don't hang your hat on the revised later engines being fully sorted - unfortunately they're better but still not right...

Looking at LR Time and Barum Engines sites, It has been suggested they do not have the same problems in lighter vehicles.
Someone also suggested (with regard to the 3L) that low down slogging may be a cause caused by the tuning of the gearbox.
In any case both LR Time and Barum have identified that crankshaft flex could be a/the major problem. (again re 3l).
So much so that Barum will not warrant a 3L rebuild even with a new crankshaft.
I haven't heard much re the 3L in Rangers or Everest yet.
The main reason I have an Everest and not my much preferred RRS.

Drive in Sports mode (nothing sporty about 2.5t barge) to keep the revs up and avoid low down slogging then?

Thats a given, just look at the 3L, but still the cam pulley breakage isn't that common.
