    Which hose to drain coolant?

I want to change the coolant in my D4 TDV6, but after studying the workshop manual and a few YouTube videos, I'm unsure which hose to remove to drain the coolant. So I'm asking for your guidance.

Most Youtube videos show a plastic chamber, which I think is the thermostat housing, and one of the hoses is removed from there. Easy, or so I thought.

The workshop manual steps include removing three hoses: the transmission cooler, another hose and the rear A/C. I don't have the latter, and the I've worked out which hose to remove from the transmission cooler - so far so good. The other hose, which I assume is to drain the main radiator, is the problem. Here is the pic from the workshop manual, which shows a T coupling and removing one of the hoses from it:

Nothing like what I see when I remove the cover/panel and look.

Here is what I see when I remove the side cover:

And here is the view after removing the centre cover, looking up to the left of the transmission cooler:

(I cleaned the area after taking these photos).

I'm guessing that multi-way junction houses the thermostat. Which hose do I remove to drain the radiator? Thanks.

Try and trace the hose that goes to the bottom of the radiator, I will be tackling my D3 TDV6 next weekend which looks just as painful also have rear HVAC.

I use the quick connects on the drivers side that go up to the fuel cooler. That drains pretty much everything bar the heater core. I use compressed air to blow the FBH and heater core out.

Thanks for the replies! I spent more time with the workshop manual to find a pic of the thermostat housing. I've labelled the hoses (see pic) as I think the are connected. Will have another attempt at the coolant when the weather stops crying.

I have always wondered why LR make this so difficult,i did another brand the other week.

Drain tap on bottom of rad, drain plug bottom of engine, one bleed tube high up in the engine bay.

    Easy as.

Because they can. Anyone masochistic enough to own and work on a Land Rover must be competent (or stupid I suppose). Simple is for Asian makes.

Simple for sure, but also way better thought out.

LR put no thought into maintenance, maintenance costs, etc. They couldn't care less,as we all know.

There’s a small cooler hose down near the front cross member - pull that and everything will drain nicely.

Thanks Tombie. I did that (removed the quick connect from the transmssion oil cooler) but only 9.5 litres came out (with all bleeders open). I also removed the heater return pipe from the thermostat housing and that drained another 0.5 litre i.e. 10 litres total. Since the dry fill capacity is 15.9 litres (w/o rear heater) that's a lot of old coolant left behind. What did I do wrong?

I attempted to remove some of the other connections from the thermostat housing (in case some more coolant was 'behind' the closed thermostat) but I "chickened out" when I was using nearly enough force to break the plastic housing. I can't have the vehicle disabled in the driveway until the shops re-open...

Don't blame you , haven't done mine yet as i think i'll replace the thermostat and that hidden coolant connector on the block for good measure.
