Thread: Check Engine Light - Amber - Disco 3 SE 2005 - Best Case and Worst Case Scenario

Hi Everyone

I'd like to sound you out about best and worst case scenarios for the Check Engine Light - Amber that's come one. Car drives perfectly, no smoke, no audible warning chimes, no rattles or roughness.

I have a Discovery 3 SE 2005 that I recently purchased.

About 15 mins into the drive home after buying it, an amber Check Engine light came on. I contacted the previous owner, he had this problem last year, took it to the mechanic who ran diagnostics and found there was no fault so reset the warning light.

I took it to a LR specialist, who ran the diagnostics (honestly, what he told me may have been spoken in Swahili because I'm not a car person - though I suspect that is rapidly going to be changing!) Long story short, he reset the light and no problems. For a couple of weeks.

Driving home in yesterday's torrential rain, the light on the dash came on again. I'll book it back in to the LR guys for a more thorough diagnostic scan. I'm trying to understand what the possibilities could be and how much I could be up for (ball park). ie if it's the catalytic converter what's the likely price for replacement including fitting.

I've read the manual, searched the internet and can't find much useful info. (The fuel cap is on correctly.)

I checked the car thoroughly before purchasing (including speaking to the mechanics who serviced it). No problems. Test drove perfectly. Has low (135 000) km for its age.

The car is booked in for inspection on Tuesday (rego renewal coming up in early May), will it fail RWC if this light is on?

yes, it will fail a RWC test as is.

If you're going to keep the car, then a Gap iid and a course in basic Swahili would be a start.

Otherwise Deep pockets are the go

It’s a Petrol. As I mentioned there are no issues such as rough running, smoke, noises etc, so fingers crossed it’s something simple. I’ll see what the mechanic comes up with and will make a note of the codes.

Depending on what the outcome is, I might get a Gap iid at some point, will commence lessons in Swahili at first opportunity. At this point, am planning on keeping the car.
