Reply With QuoteFirstly, I'd check the alternator. If charging OK, I'd replace the battery with a Varta G14 (there may be an upgraded model) and reset the BMS. Clear all faults and see what happens.

SupporterAs the title suggests I was driving today and on 3 occasions several of the Disco 4 systems shut down, were off line for half a minute or so and then slowly came back on line as they rebooted. From what I observed this included the entertainment unit, the climate control system, camera feeds and several feeds to the LCD dash display. Its most likely that others also rebooted however this was not observable whilst driving.
The car drove with out issue, accelarating, cruising and braking as normal. I experienced the first reboot 3 minutes into a 20 minute drive, I then parked whilst I did some other activities, 2 hours later I drove home and had 2 further reboots, roughly 3 and 5 minutes into the return journey.
On returning home I left the car running and plugged in my IID for a ECU fault scan. It lit up like a christmas tree with the faults below. I then emailed them to myself, cleared the faultts and scanned again. Only 2 faults remain and I suspect if I restart the car in the morning they may also be gone.
I then put the car on charge and its currently charging. Battery was between 13.2 and 14.5 whilst driving (shown on the dash - IID feature), but the main battery is now over 7 years old so could be on its way out, second battery is only 2 years old and I have a full Traxide charge system.
Has anyone experienced anything similar and can offer advise? I'm happy to find a replacement battery if that is the root cause. Its not rained in a while in Melbourne where I live and I havent washed the car in a while so I dont think the ECU's are wet. Engine bay I keep clean and tidy but never jet wash. Disco has done 268k so not high milage for an MY12 HSE.

SubscriberI use a battery tester that comes with an alternator test function, but any auto electrician should be able to test it. Bear in mind the typical life of a D4 alternator is about 170,000km to about 190,000km. If you're on your original alternator after 13 years I'd certainly suspect it.

SupporterAs far as I know it's the original alternator. I purchased the disco in 2016 at 4 years old and 90k so I doubt it would have been replaced.
Car is still on charge from last night so the batteries must have been low. I'm see what happens over the next week and get the alternator tested if there are any reoccurances.

SupporterUpdate, so I charged the dual batteries from Saturday late arvo to 10am this morning and it did not finish charging, I've got a 10amp smart charger and it sat on absorbtion phase the entire time. However the car continues to start and drive well with no other issues, but I had another episode of systems reboot whilst driving this afternoon, not even the indicators would work until CPU's fully rebooted.
I'll get batter and alternator tested during the week. I doub't its a bad earth or car would have other issues likke poor starting or lights. Has no issues cranking.
I know the system is voltage sensitive so it may be the alternator putting out voltages too high and CPU's being spiked or shutting down in protection. Public holiday here today so i cant get the electrics tested.
I'll plug in the IID on the drive to work tomorrow and see what the voltage does as I drive then try find an auto elec to test.
Its the only significant issue i have had with the disco in over 10 years of ownership so I can't complain.

I can't recall the exact details, but something along the lines of a failing alternator can, in cases, cause a dead short, resulting in rare cases of fire.

SubscriberDisconnect the 2nd battery and see if it charges, the traxide system can mask a bad battery . If either battery is failing the bad battery will pull charge from the other until both are below optimum voltage.
