    Oil For D4 3L V6

My first post in the D4 section.

I don't yet own one but planning on getting one.

Saw this really good price for Penrite Vantage full synthetic 5/30 oil

At this price I thought I might stock up for future.

As this oil suitable for the D4?

    Just a moment...
    Dave.

I was asked " Is it ignorance or apathy?" I replied "I don't know and I don't care."

I don't suggest you "stock up". A bit like my mother, whom I recommend doesn't buy ripe bananas or long life milk because we have no idea how long she'll last. You are buying a 3L V6. I assume when you purchase it the crankshaft will be a single piece casting. I reckon the more you stockpile for the future, the more you are tempting the gods of 3L snapped cranks.

Repco have good sales on Penrite at least twice a year (Easter and Bathurst), so just take it as it comes.

    Yep. But wait, there's more...
5W/30 (dumbass) is fine in a new motor for around 100,000km. After that use Penrite HPR 5W/40 (also fully synthetic). Any D4 you buy now will already have done at least 100,000km, so it's a moot point. Also, by now it will be due for belt changes and a few other things.
    Want my advice?
If there's a D4 you're interested in, the very first thing to do is an oil pressure test. The old-fashioned way: with a pressure gauge. If it is slightly down on spec, then the bearings will be worn and the motor is on its way to destruction. Yes, it could be a worn oil pump, but just replacing that could be hiding the real issue with the Lion V6: engine block warping due to poor seasoning.
If I was looking for a D4, I'd buy the cleanest low km car I could find that had an e-diff. I would then remove the engine and have it rebuilt and blueprinted. Depending on mileage, I may replace the alternator (they tend to start failing about 180,000km and perhaps the aircon compressor). A lot of the money you'll spend would have been spent anyway on stuff like new water pump, water bottle, idlers etc that should be done with a belt change.
Let's assume you can get a decent D4 for $40k. I'm suggesting you spend another $30k doing the above. That gives you a touring Landrover that could probably only be bettered by a new Defender for, I dunno, $160k. Then you spend on mods like long range fuel tank, roof racks, winch etc.

There is one I'm interested in but the owner won't sell it.

You do realise it's in pieces at the moment having the engine rebuilt? Been four months so far!

I changed from Penrite 5W30 over to Penrite HPR5 at roughly 140,000 klms. Am now at 228,xxx and the HPR5 is returning excellent results on the oil analysis reports I use.
It often comes on special at REPCO, Autobarn so no real need to stock up too much. I always have an oil change "worth" (6 litres) in my stock but that's only 'cos it's been on special somewhere.
If you buy a D4 I suggest you go on to HPR5 at first oil change.
The genuine oil filter is a Mann and REPCO sell these at far lower price than your LR Dealer.

I buy from Sparesbox when on special in 20L drums with free delivery. 5w40 is currenly about $10/L.
We're at Tidal River there's a nice looking white D4 across the way. Want me to ask if he wants to sell - he's towing a 20+ foot van

Exactly what we took on the Madigan trip except no e-diff.
