Dumb idea, TD5 although good is not powerful enough for a heavy D3.

    A tuned TD5 isn't particularly slow, certainly quicker than a stock 2.7.

A 130 defender has a higher GVM than a D3 or D4 as well, not that it's any recommendation.

However having skimmed through that video, what a lot of work and hassle, I wouldn't be doing it.

I wouldn't be doing it either. The legal issues in Aus alone would make it problematic. Those guys are trying to sell their adaptors. But I will follow the drive vids nevertheless.

Standard D3 is only 200kg heavier than the same D2. All the crap on and in my D2 doesn't seem to make it underpowered.... err, when it's going, that is. 360,000 km new. And I don't think many people would call the TD5 unreliable.

But the vid was posted for entertainment, because, as I say, such a conversion would be almost impossible in Aus, or if not, an economic disaster to gain compliance.

Impossible I believe. The newest TD5 is Euro 3 compliant, in 2004 ADRs mandated Euro 4, IIRC.

    Early D3 2.7 is also EU3.

    Late 07 went to EU4.

I was in a workshop recently where the mechanic was repairing a TD 5 engine and he couldn’t purchase some engine components as they are are no longer supported.
He was having to purchase second hand parts I can’t remember the full details but I am headed back there next week and I will confirm what parts. So if you can’t get parts why would you bother trying to fit in any car let alone a Discovery 3/4.

ADR 79/02 was introduced in 06 I believe. New car compliance became mandatory sometime in 08. Of course, cars with it came here earlier than that in some cases.
