I fitted LED bulbs that are designed to replace the D3S which still use the ballast. They were around $60 a pair a couple of years ago and IMO they were better than the HID, lighting the verge better. They are a direct replacement.
Look for LED D3S.
I've dropped a low beam bulb on my 2011 D4 HSE, specifically the OsramXenarc D3S 35W.
The high beams are both fine, being PhilipsH7 12V 55W DOT 12972 LL (Long Life). And I'd be sure that all bulbs are original, with some 219k on the odo.
Before I just go buy a replacement (or a pair), do I take the opportunity to upgrade the whole lot, and if so to what?
I don't do much night driving in the country, and always found the high beams adequate anyway. But I see there are options these days, and having some extra light on the highs would be helpful at times.
Would the the L319 brains trust care to enlighten me?
If at first you don't succeed, that's one data point. - xkcd

When I had my 2011D4, I upgraded the whole lot using Stedi Copperheads and other leds from their range. Check out www.stedi.com
I didn't have the hid or xenon upgrade on the D4
Stedi lights were well worth it, no bulb failure in 8years of the conversion.
