Thread: Cheap roof racks

I have the factory "short" roof rails on the D3.

Before the D3, and with considerable overlap I had the ultimate Ikea flatpack hauler in my 740 Volvo wagon. That had the factory roof racks supplemented with 2 Rola racks and I could transport anything from a 2.3M high Ikea wardrobe, to several 200mm x 6000mm PVC sewer pipes, not to mention the highly overloaded runs with pool fence and kids play sets (back streets at 50kph only!).

Due to the ~$1k rego+insurance per year and the fact the D3 hadn't actually broken down for a few years, the Ikea hauler had to go. Now all I have is the D3. I don't want racks on it permanently. What I'd like is a set of affordable racks I can mount up the 1-6 times a year I need them, then put them back in the garage where they're not generating wind noise or excess fuel consumption.

Any experience and/or suggestions? Of course this has been triggered by the pending need to transport one or more 2.4x1.2M plywood panels. Nothing urgent, but I can sense it's coming.

Yeah, just bars. I’ll have a squiz and see what I can scrounge up. Just need them to fit the rails.

There are other brand bars that'll fit some cheaper than others, Thule ,pro-rack etc.
