    Tyre recommendations?

OK, I'm after a set of tyres for the D3. It's mainly used as my wife's daily transport, so I can't use anything too aggressive or noisy, but I do want something with a little more grip and strength/puncture resistance for off-road use when touring. I'm guessing I want a set of AT's, so what are other's running?

I had General AT2's on my D2a back in England for the same kind of use the D3 gets here, and I was very impressed with them as a cheaper tyre than the BF Goodrich's....anyone running them here?

    Hi jik22,
I can't comment on their bias or not, but have a look here:

    Good info though, thanks.

    18" Tyres

One of the problems is the tyre sizes available in 18".
BF Goodrich have just released their all Terrain KO in 265x65x18 = 31.6".
another option is mickey Thompson ATZ in 275x65x18 = 32.0"

    Hope this helps.

    Regards

Hi Jeff, I had the Pirelli Scorpions on my 03 RR and they would have to be the worst wearing and most dangerous tyres I’ve ever had on any vehicle I’ve owned.

I also had Cooper H/T Plus on my 03 RR for 20k.

I’ve always been a Michelin fan and when they finally became available for the 18” RR wheels, at about the same time the Wranglers on my wife’s D3 were in need of replacing and as I wanted to try some Michelins on the 03 RR, I put the Coopers on the D3 and even after 20k, they still looked new.

They have done another 10k on the D3 and hardly show any wear.

I only had the Michelins on the RR for about 10k but if I had kept the 03 RR I would have gone back to the Coopers when the Michelins needed replacing.

The Coopers H/T Plus are more of a road tyre and are great on the D3.

    Cheers

Just goes to show one review isn't worth much...hence why I asked on here. Mind you, they must have been good on their test vehicle to score higher than their trusty Coopers.

The Wranglers were OK, I was just after a bit more toughness for tracks and the like, and wanted to put the AT's on now, use them while we have the car, and then put the Wranglers back on once the AT's are worn, which should equate to about the time we trade it before it runs out of warranty!

Looks like I'll also have to see what tyres actually come in the right size too...

Hi again Jeff, when I first put the Scorpions on the 03 RR they were fantastic for about the first 5 to 10k but they then very quickly turned into a nightmare.

Not long after putting the Scorpions on, I was reading a USA web site for F250s and one of the guys on there had the Scorpions on his rig and was warning everybody else of how bad they were and at that time I just took it as a bad opinion as I was finding them to be great ( not for long ).

He made the comment that it was like driving down a freeway covered in spaghetti and after about 15k that is the best way to describe the handling of these tyres.

By about 20k, they were almost bald, these tyres are absolute crap and should be avoided at all cost.

    Cheers.

    Hi Jeff,

I have Pirelli Scorpion A/T's on the Disco. I have never had a problem with them and they have survived 105000km. They are not down to the wear markers yet but getting close.

Hi Phil, I have had no experience with Pirelli’s A/Ts and they may be OK, mine were the Scorpion One tyres, Pirelli’s road tyres and thats the type of tyre Jeff is looking at.

    Cheers

Hey mate, I run General Tire AT2's and have found them great all rounders. Much better grip off road and confidence and on road....couldnt tell the difference between them and the HP Wranglers that I had.....plus it makes the D3 look oh so much better . Pics of the tyres below
