    Gearbox oil level

Does anyone know how to check the gearbox level on the D3 or where the filler plug is located, I have developed a leak between the gearbox and engine and want to be able to check the level

As it's supposed to be "sealed for life", I don't know if there's any way to check the level. If it's leaking, wouldn't be a warranty issue? Even if you're past warranty, wouldn't they have to do something due to this "lifetime" issue?

    Cheers,

    Richard,
It is located on the RHS of the gearbox at the rear of the unit.
Remove plastic cover & look just above the linkage shifter. It is an Allen-keyed bolt filler plug. From memory its an 8mm Allen-key.
To check level vehicle must be running & it will possibly a small amount dribble out, if its not running & u remove the fill plug u wil cover yourself in fluid. Best to just undo slowly & check threads, if threads on filler plug start to fill with fluid then all is fine. It stinks & starts to burn if not washed away, well on my hands anyway.
    Cheers.

Thanks for the replies, I've been able to check it out and the prognosis is not good, lost a fair amount of oil although I have replaced it I will need to get further info on repair, like a quote.
The boxes aren't "sealed for life" unfortunately, the oil is supposed to not need replacing for life provided there is no loss of oil.

Sorry to hear about your gearbox leak Richard. I've never heard of this problem on the D3.

I take it your 3 yr warranty has (probably just) expired?

I've been told that LR are very good with helping out with problems even if the warranty has expired so long as your service book is stamped up. Might be worth a chat with your friendly dealer - the leak could have been there for months??
