    Just to rekindle this thread...

I've not yet bought the tyres. I'm off to Fraser Island for a week in less than 2 weeks time and I need to make a decision! Will my 19" cut the mustard at Fraser or will I be spending all of my time getting recovered? Any thoughts? Has anyone taken a either a D3 or RR with 19" on the sand and if so, how did they go?

    Cheers

I've been on sand a few times on my 18"s with no probs at all. Make sure the DSC is off though!

Hi Frisbee, I've just returned from Stockton Beach today where I've spent the weekend with 15 other 4X4's from various makes. My D3 V8 HSE with standard 19's went better than any of them. I used 15lb (1.2b) tyre pressure, in Sand mode with DSC turned OFF - something you have to re-set each time you re-start the vehicle.

I previously owned a TD5 SE with Cooper ST's 16" and in my opinion the D3 with 19's did not have to stand back for the TD5 with 16" at all.

All went well until something went through the sidewall of one tyre - and the end of my expedition after I've fitted the spare.

From my previous trips to Fraser, I don't believe you have anything to be concerned about performance wise. Haven't attempted it towing a trailer.

I was very concerned with the performance of the standard 19" on sand and considerd changing to 18"'s, but will now see if I can fit a set of 19" GoodYear MTR's once the Dealers open tomorrow.

    Enjoy Fraser!!

Ah, thank you. I wasn't real keen to buy a set of 17" just for the occasional maddie on the beach.

I've done a side wall in the OEA Wrangles and replaced the lot with the Pirelli ATR. Funnily enough, for an AT type tyre they have better turn-in than the road biased Wranglers. Also, they seem to have a more upright side wall. May just see how they go (and pray a bit too).

    Cheers and thanks.

Im up there on the 23rd Oct for a few days. Might see you there if we overlap. I have done a lot of beach work with my Dicso 2 with only 29.5 inch tyres on. Way keen to get up there now with 31's on! (265/70/16).

    Cheers

I've driven the standard 19" Goodyears on beach sand and find myself either at very low pressure to keep floating (14psi) and regularly slicing the flappy sidewalls or about 18-20psi and regularly using the MaxxTrax. I now have MTRs and at Easter did about 600km of limestone+sand tracks at 14psi and it worked a treat.

Ended up buying some 17" steel wheels and putting 265R65 17" Yokohama Geolanders on them. Spent 7 days on fraser and never looked like getting bogged. Tyres came through with flying colours.

Disco tore both freaking rear mudflaps though and it's external temperature is frizzed (thinks its minus 40C).

    Hi Fris,
I think you'll find that -40 is an indication of an open circuit.

    17" Alloy wheels

Regarding 17" wheels for a LRD3, can anyone suggest a suitable 17" Alloy wheel type for an LRD3 TDV6 in Australia ? Or should I just buy the LR originals?

    Thanks.
