I never really noticed a difference on the D3's (and I've had both), but the Safari seemed a little noisier. I was suspicious of the Safari's effect on my fuel consumption, but I could never really pin it down to the snorkel alone, as I'd modified quite a few other things by then.Quote:

It seems that I need to be interested in this topic as my air filter element was very dirty at 45K, so the external air vent still manages to allow plenty of dust to be ingested. I fitted a snorkel to my D2 because of the dust.
That's the reason I initially fitted mine- went through 2 air filters in 6mths/20 000km!Quote:

I've been slack, not having checked the D4's filter at all. My D2's got clogged enough to seriously affect fuel consumption after 10K but its intake was from the inner guard. I'll check this one in 10K, as long as I remember!

Its in my maintenance schedule now, not that there's any guarantee that it will be looked at like a lot of other equipment maintenance.
How is the mudguard air grille removed? Gauging by the dirt in the tube, it looks as though dirt is being drawn from where the tube joins behind the grille and if so, I'll seal that for starters.
If you mean the decorative grill that sort of fills the air intake hole in the side of the fender, it seems the "approved" technique is to stand with your back to it, then put both hands behind your back, grab the grill louvers with your fingers and pull upwards and tip out from the bottom.Quote:
