    I know you guys are dealing with 18" rims, which is why i have on order 17x8" rims to get a Light Truck Construction tyre, currently a Perilli 17x8 ATR 245/70/17LT at 1360kg.

    As I understand it a LT construction means heaver construction etc, able to handle heaver loads etc, last longer, etc.

    I was heading down the path of BFB/AT/KO but read several reports in Aust Mag and decided that I didnt want 90k left on the tyre, and the car wraped around a tree at 5k because of difficult bitumen handeling chartistics, so I went/am going for the Perilli ATR in 245/70/17 for my trundlebus with 3Ton van behind.

    LT construction is heavier and more strongly built. However even P rated tyres will more than handle the D3's loads, easy to get a P tyre such that if you came close to its load rating you'd have exceeded GVM amongst other things. Lasting longer -- no difference, that's about tread wear, but you could argue the LTs last longer as less puncture-prone. LTs are not so good for fuel efficiency btw.

    No modern mud tyre will degrade handling so badly you're likely to wrap it around a tree. You'd need an extreme tyre for that and the noise would remind you to go very slowly!

    For a given brand and pattern, the LT version often has deeper tread (and a corresponding reduction in speed rating) so I would expect them to last longer.

    The speed rating is more to do with the construction than the tread depth. Basically a heavier tyre cannot dissipate heat as effectively.

    Yes, you may expect the deeper the tread the longer the life, but it doesn't always work that way. Muddies are not known for lasting longer than roadies.

    gesus, working out best tyre is a nightmare.

    Only certainity is that I do not want Wranglers again.

    Tyre needs to be mainly aimed at on road performance, expecially in the wet as QLD downpours can be treacherous.

    ok so far I have in no order of preference:

    255/60R18 112V

    Pirelli Scorpion Zero - $485

    Continenlal CrossContact UHP $450 - dealer said this was the best handling, even better then the Pirelli Scorpion Zero

    Yokohama Geo51 $395 - no idea about this but a tyre dealer pushed them hard

    As to which is best I have no idea, leaning towards the Conti CrossContact UHP though at this stage

    yeah looked at those but as I do 99.9999% on road and the tiny off road is limited to the beach I thought a highware tyre would be better.

    I have been ringing around looking at prices as well. These are all from dealers around Parramatta and Blacktown (255/60/18)

    Prices:
    Wrangler Hps from $373 - $598
    ContCrossContact AT 505 - 528
    ContiCrossContact UHP 416
    Pirelli Scorpion ATR 395
    General Grabbers AT2 375

    I am looking at the Grabbers since I want some decent compromise between Road and some off road.

    Interestingly the Trivett Tyres bloke said that he thought the Conti At would be better since the side wall on the Grabbers was not as strong, Trivett service guy told me when I had the car seviced lately that he had quite a few DIsco 3 customers with Grabbers and they were all happy.

    How is the mileage on the Grabbers?

    Ring Gary at Alto Artarmon, they had some GG (and I think some cross contacts?) ata very good price.
