    D3 Power Failure

    Can anyone help please.

I have just returned from 2 weeks in Tassie only to have the holiday badly interrupted by my 2006 Discovery 3 SE packing it in.
I was highway driving (towing a Kimberly Kamper) near Launceston, when the Message Board came up with the message "Special Programs Off" and at the same time I lost all pulling power.
I pulled the car over. The car was still running and revving but no pulling power. It felt like you were trying to drive with the park brake on (but it wasnt). The message board said "Engine Management System Fault"
I turned the car off and restarted, it then would pull. I set off and again I lost all power (as before). I turned off then on again and this time it worked and stayed working. I drove back to some friends and then left the camper and took the car to Landrover in Launceston.
All I got from them was that they had got the error report off the computer. (Apparently something to do with the Turbo not generating enough power).
Landrover solution was to clear the message and take it for an other drive. If ok then all fixed!!!! If not then they would have to download new software and rebuild the turbo???
It did work ok again and as I now have the car back have got back to the mainland. But am no clearer as to what the problem really was. More importantly I am concerned that it will occur again when I least expect it!!
Does anyone have any experience with a problem like this? Any advice would be most appreciated.

    Thanks
    William

Had the same problem and my turbo was replaced under warranty. It seems that the variable vanes in the turbo can jam hence loss of boost. I believe that there is a software upgrade that prevents this

Thanks very much Garryc. I think that I will now speak with my local Landrover Dealer and get them to upgrade the software/fix as well.
    Thanks once again

Ive had the same problem in Northern NSW towing the Jayco.
Heaps of black smoke & loss of power.
All the bells & whistles went off & showed check engine system.
Pulled over and reset computer and went okay for a while until we hit some big hills.
Only way to get home was to keep resetting computer.
Was using 17ltr per hundred plus, so was very sick to say the least.
Worked out that we had a turbo boost hose leak. (split hose)
$500.00 later she goes like a bullet.
The advice to get softwear upgrade is always good, but also check all turbo hoses, as usually a hidden symptom.
    Cheers Dave

As said there is a software upgrade which helps prevent the vanes sticking but if it has failed like that I would be pushing for a new turbo.
Not withstanding the poss of burst turbo hose mentioned by busman.

It's my understanding that the software upgrade will only help if the vanes haven't stuck yet. If they have started sticking then it's a new turbo you need as well.
