My reading of the Philips website (Philips Lighting Australia - X-tremePower) would be that they say they are quite legal?
There is a "Can Bus" friendly hid conversion available from a supporter of the "Disco 3" uk website. (DISCO3.CO.UK - Dedicated to Discovery 3 and LR3 Owners and Enthusiasts) As I am a member of the "Old Codgers" 55+ brigade, I need the best light I can reasonably get so I will get the 5000K HID conversion when I do upgrade.

A couple of months ago I put HIDs on my RRS -> lots if beautiful white light.
The only problem is that HIDs take a few seconds to reach full intensity, so they are not particularly good for quick pommie style flash of the high beam.
I don't seem to have any problems with heat, but I am keeping my eye on it.
If you do decide to so this make sure you get a digital ballast. They are more expensive but more reliable and run cooler. Also there is less chance that the car computer will throw up an error code because it thinks the bulbs are blown.
If I encounter any problems I will report here.
