			Foam Insulation Disintegrated

The foam insulation on top of my TDV6 motor has finally disintegrated. It’s the bit under the nice black plastic shroud that you see when first opening the bonnet.

Has anyone come up with a cheap replacement, LR want $162 for a $2 piece of foam, I would get some ordinary foam if I thought it wouldn’t catch fire.

The protective wrap around the wiring loom is also falling apart at the slightest touch, but I think I will just use black NARVA convoluted split hose for this.

					Ryall,

Does it make much sound insulation difference when the cover is removed ?
Most vehicles with engine covers have no padding and they still sound fine
compared to those with padding aswell.

					G'day Neil,

Yes my deaf old ears can now hear the injectors and the motor, whereas before all was silent to me, however those with normal hearing may have been able to hear it.

I am looking at heat resistant foam from crazy clarks etc.

How about a piece of roof insulation , the type with silver bonded
 foil on a 20mm fibreglass batt ? ;

 Insultation Superstore - Roof Insulation

Get a piece from a building site leftover. There's loads of offcuts
in skips on new building sites around here .

I made a heat resistant foam cover for the top of the TDV6 motor.

 Materials were:
Foam Rubber from Clarks. 1m by 400mm of 10mm heat ristant foam with reflective shield cost $12
 Glue 1 small tin $10
 One old disposable glue brush.

 Method:

Make a paper template out of newspaper.

Cut foam using paper template as a guide.

Press foam down onto plastic cover so foam is pressure marked by raised ridges then score along these markings so the foam will mould to the plastic cover.

Glue the pieces together and refit to car.

 Have fun,

 Ryall

Most if not all the foam and plastic in and around a TDV6 burns very well
 Or at least mine did
Replaceing it with non flamable material would be a good idea.

 Cheers
 Rob
