"Oil Migration Condition
Customers have reported a reduction in braking assistance performance, and upon investigation dealer technicians report finding oil in the brake booster. When the engine is turned off the non-return valve in the vacuum pump does not in all cases seal. This allows engine oil to be sucked into the vacuum hose that feeds the brake booster (due to by-design residual depression in the brake booster feed hose). Oil may then migrate from the hose into the brake booster, which can lead to a reduction in brake assistance. Eventually the oil may migrate through the brake booster into the brake master cylinder where the main and primary & secondary pumping chamber seals may swell and could fail to seal."


It looks like LR changed the vacuum pump in April 2007 to stop the oil migration (LR have only one part number for the vacuum pump so when it is replaced you don't know if it is the new one)

"Vehicles manufactured between November 2005 and April 2007 are at most risk of experiencing this
condition. A modified vacuum pump was introduced in April 2007 to mitigate against this oil migration."

The Symptoms on the May 2007 to June 2009 (sy328, is yours in this range: LA440001-LA513325?) are a temporary sticking of valve (so LR just created a new issue with the new vac pump?)

"Valve Sticking Condition
The symptom has been identified as the brake vacuum pump not replenishing the vacuum in the brake booster for up to 60 seconds from engine-on, due to the pump non return valve "sticking" in the closed position. If the brake pedal is depressed typically 3-5 times within this time the brake booster vacuum becomes depleted and braking assistance is lost. Typically, within 60 seconds from engineon the valve unsticks, the brake booster vacuum is restored and full braking assistance is available.
Based on field reports, no further brake assistance symptoms are then experienced during that drivecycle."

In order to find out how many instances of the issue there are outside of the VIN range; please check if yours has oil in the vac line (undo the connetor next to the brake booster and tap it on your finger)Then post on here if yours is outside the range:

Build dates November 2005 and April 2007 VIN numbers, LA367110- LA440000

yup mine wasin at Australs yesterday for 60 thou service and they are getting the parts in to do the rectification work

Apparently the original recall was recalled.

LR will issue new one with new part Nos and new VINS. Awaiting word from dealer on when it is issued.

2005 MY D3s are EU3 compliant & have a different vacuum pump from the EU4 D3s (2006 +). That's why they're not part of this campaign.

The revised bulletin should be released soon so we'll see what that holds in store for the earlier cars.

Any updates on the possible LR recall for oil collecting in the brake booster?

Had my 2006 D3 2.7L serviced by a non-dealer workshop on 23 Dec, including replacement of steering arms/ball joints. In the process they managed to 'lose' brakes and subsequently found oil in the booster. They advised they had found the same problem in another D3 but Brisbane Austral (LR ?) rectified the problem even though the car was 12mths out of warranty.

My vehicle was out of warranty in Aug 09 but I will be pursuing with Austral and LR. Particularly annoyed as I had queried Austral about this problem at the previous service with them and was told the 'recall'/problem didn't apply to my vehicle!
