Is the D4 a real new model or just a D3 update

In the early 90s the D1 was released and went through a number of major facelifts and changes until 1999 but was still called the D1. The D2 went through two (?) major changes until 2004/5 but was still a D2.

We now have had the D3 for about 4 years with no changes and along comes the "D4". But is it really a "new" version that warrants the D4 tag or is it really just a D3 update. With a new grill, changes to the interior and some under the skin changes I do not think this is a new model that warrants the term "D4" as it just seems to be an update like the D1 was updated in 94. It had new interior, new engines, new gearboxes, and major changes to the suspension but was not considered to be a new model when maybe it was.

So what makes the D4 a new model rather than an update? Also is the term D4 official or made up by buyers to justify their new purchase?

Its certainly official. I think its primarily for marketting reasons to get people to update and to get those who thought the D3 wasn't up-market enough (esp USA).

It's definitely called the D4, and definitely should be called the D3a because aside from the engine, the other changes are just refinements here and there like a new dash, tweaks to Terrain Response etc. It is not a new car, in the same way the D3 was relative to the D2.

Notably, the Rangie Sport is not called the Rangie Sport II despite it having all the improvements of the D4.

It's just marketing as to what a vehicle is called.

    I still think its a D3a

Its weird really, as I still think of the Defender Transit as being the LandRover Series VIII.

IMHO it still looks like a high tech aquarium on wheels. The terrain response looks impressive, but........

    just an update

Is it just me that thinks that faux wood on the dashboard looks like cheap crap, bring back style and class into car interiors if your charging so much for the bloody things

    X2.

I'm wondering how well the front-end will be disguised using a bull bar and insect screen over the grille etc so that its assumed to be a D3.

    DS?D4

Id say its a "mk2" D3 or a D3.5. Still- it looks good in original spec.....but add the bull bars and the steel rear step etc- then park it next to a similar spec D3 and play 'spot the difference'...moments of fun for all the family!

Thing is, in some areas it's much more than just an 'Update'...

There have been some big changes in the engine and handling, so much so that the D4 with the 3.0 TDV6 handles and is similar in performance to the outgoing RRS TDV8.
